Ned Kelly miniseries tipped for Nine

2014-03-12_1000Nine is tipped to announce a new miniseries on the story of Ned Kelly.

The Australian reports Peter FitzSimons’ book on Australia’s most famous bushranger is set to become an eight-part miniseries from Playmaker Media (Love Child, House Husbands).

Details are likely to emerge in coming weeks as international sales are negotiated at the MIPCOMTV market in France.

If it proceeds, it would mark the second period miniseries by FitzSimons who has Batavia in development with Screentime for TEN.

Ned Kelly has previously been depicted in the Seven miniseries The Last Outlaw starring John Jarratt, while The Story of the Kelly Gang was Australia’s first feature film in 1906.

Nine declined to comment.

  6. Aussie_Austridge – actually in the 19th century, the Australian accent would be the nasally strine of today. The Aussie accent of days of yore would have been a hybrid of working class English and Irish. Jagger’s accent may have been closer to the truth than you suspect.

    I am still trying to work out how they’re going to get the requisite 97 boobs into the production of Underkelly. Promises to be cliched shite.

    Already been one mini-series as Ned Kelly on TV.

    Hundreds of books on it.

    What’s out there about Ned Kelly we don’t know, I’ll tell you lot right here, Sweet F(Censored) all.

    Come on Channel 9 come up with something more original.

  13. You forgot the 1970 film Ned Kelly starring Mick Jagger. I saw it at the drive-in as a kid in 1971. The opening scene is in black and white and titled The End showing Kelly being hanged. After that the film changes into colour and the story starts from the beginning.

    Mick Jagger’s attempt to put on an Irish accent is quite laughable, especially since Kelly’s descendants have repeatedly pointed out that all members of the Kelly Gang (including Ned) were born in Victoria and spoke with Australian accents. Hopefully the producers of this mini-series will not make the same mistake.

  15. Oh no! How many Ned Stories have been made now for big and small screen? Sadly none of them have worked mainly because Ned Kelly was never a liberator or thinker or the embodiment of a hero. This is well ploughed territory. Can’t understand why Nine thinks it will find a large free to air audience for it. Australia needs a Joan of Dapto or similar.

  18. I reckon it will be called Underbelly meets Ned Kelly. Wonder how close to the truth it will actually be or perhaps dramatized like all other channel 9 mini series.
