Nine’s new period drama series Love Child has been renewed for a second series, just two weeks after its television debut.
The series from Playmaker Media has enjoyed strong ratings and critical success.
Stars Jessica Marais (Joan Millar), Jonathan LaPaglia (Dr. Patrick McNaughton) and Mandy McElhinney (Matron Frances Bolton) will all be back in series two, with storylines to kick off on New Year’s Eve 1970.
“I’m really excited to be a part of Love Child. I had a great time shooting the first series and I’m looking forward to working with the talented cast and crew on series 2,” said Marais.
Also returning are Ella Scott Lynch (Shirley Ryan), Sophie Hensser (Viv Maguire), Gracie Gilbert (Annie Carmichael) Harriet Dyer (Patricia Saunders) and Miranda Tapsell (Martha Tenant).
In a joint statement, Nine’s Heads of Drama, Jo Rooney and Andy Ryan, said: “We are delighted with how Australian audiences have fallen in love with Love Child, and we are looking forward to working with Playmaker and this incredible cast in series two.”
David Taylor from Playmaker said “Dream cast, lots of heart and authored character-driven drama… everyone at Playmaker can’t wait to revisit the world of Love Child for a second series.”
Pre-production on the new series will commence soon in Sydney.

So if Playmaker come up with a four million figure of viewers for this show taking into account, metro and regional etc. does it mean that in actual fact all channels have much better ratings than are advertised, so why don’t they ever show these figures on all shows?
I haven’t watched it, apart from a few minutes of the first episode, but everyone looks so plastic. Jessica Marais is made up to within an inch of her life, masses of eye makeup, all perfectly groomed … totally unrealistic for someone playing a nurse(?) at that time.
And her character is just too, too perfect. To me it just looks like another soap.
The promos didn’t do Love Child justice. It’s a great show and Marais is superb as is the soundtrack. Good to see Australia embracing Australian produced drama. Hopefully the second series of Puberty Blues will shine as well.
Great news. I’ve been enjoying this show as well, so i’m happy it’s been renewed. I probably a nostalgia junkie, as i’m a big fan of Puberty Blues also.
@MM. According to Playmaker, taking into account metro and regional consolidated ratings figures for the premiere and encore screenings it got 3.162, with a peak of 4.451.
Yeah, I read that too a few months ago that it had been renewed. I remember them saying that they must be very confident it will be a hit to renew it before it had even aired.
Read that it was watched by four million viewers, where did that figure come from?

Mark: I was at the 2014 season launch and I don’t recall that announcement. However if the decision was already made internally he may well have said that to one journo. Sometimes that’s the way these things fall down.
