The Block nudging My Kitchen Rules, Schapelle scoop disappoints.

Ratings: Seven won the night but Nine was winning from 7:40pm while TEN couldn't manage 500,000.

Twins_5_001With 1.09m viewers for Seven’s Sunday Night story on Schapelle Corby it’s clear the nation’s interest in the story has now waned. The thought of any follow-up story with her reuniting with her mother would be better served by her having Schapelle reunited with INXS. They pulled 1.9m viewers for the show the week before.

Seven did well until 7:40pm, but The Block‘s room reveal was nipping at Seven’s heels. Now the instant restaurants are over, the show could be more susceptible. Nine’s Fat Tony dropped but was still enough to win the timeslot.

Over on TEN the trouble continues with the network unable to pull 500,000 viewers. It has even strategically split So You Think You Can Dance Australia into two figures in order to elicit a higher average.

Seven network won with 34.1% then Nine 30.8%, ABC 15.7%, TEN 13.3% and SBS 6.1%.

My Kitchen Rules (1.62m) topped the night for Seven then Seven News (1.25m), Sunday Night (1.09m), Downton Abbey (991,000) and V8 Supercars (647,000 ). Castle was 278,000.

The Block hit a new season high at 1.5m viewers for Nine followed by 60 Minutes (1.2m), Fat Tony and Co. (1.13m), Nine News (1.12m),  and Person of Interest (502,000).

ABC News (779,000) led ABC1 then David Attenborough (764,000), Rake (638,000), a Compass repeat (323,000) and a Midsomer Murders repeat (269,000).

TEN under-performed with TEN Eyewitness News best at 438,000. So You Think You Can Dance Australia was split into two figures of 408,000 / 329,000. David Attenborough: Meerkats was 305,000, Graham Norton was 296,000 and Have You Been Paying Attention? was 226,000.

Stephen Hawking: A Brief History of Mine was best on SBS ONE at 229,000 then Mysterious Sunken Cities (193,000) World News Australia (167,000).

Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom on ABC topped multichannels at 232,000. Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras was 137,000.

  1. I enjoyed The Corby story last night. Sunday Night did a great job on the drought story, great but sad viewing. I am finding Downton Abbey pretty boring now. They should of made last year the final series. Its starting to become a soap opera now.

  2. I’m curious about what figure Hawking did with Benedict Cumberbatch on SBS. I realise it can’t be too high because of the late hour it started and ended. Although I loved that they paired it with the documentary.

On the Downton thing I guess I didn’t mind it was late this week because it gave me a chance to see the start of the Hawking documentary. I will admit I’d get it on DVD along with the other. Who knows if they will be released here however. I don’t blame the audience if they can’t stay up late. Because I suspect it was the reason.

  3. Network Ten is killing the Graham Norton Show. I hope the commerical arm of the BBC is hanging their heads low for pimping this show out to the “highest bidder”. To prove they still have some capacity for rational decision making, the BBC should hand this show back to the ABC. It would certainly get far more respect from both broadcaster and viewers.

  4. Considering the V8s got around double the ratings on Sunday afternoon than Saturday evening, seems like the primetime experiment has been a failure so far.

  5. Not everyone who loves Downton Abbey is over 55.

Friends I know who are fans of the show including myself – none of which are over 55 – have all seen this season already.

  6. Considering Downton finished after 10pm last night it did a pretty good job just below 1m. Plus it will pick up even more viewers over the week. It picked up an extra 242k last week.

The Block is rising which isn’t much of a surprise but still don’t watch it. Sunday Night got what it deserves. I boycotted last night as i can’t stand that person any longer. I hope the networks realise this. Move on.

As for TEN and Dance, any other network the axe would have fallen on the show. Its just not good enough. It sucks too because the talent this year is great but TEN did it no favours.

  7. @eagerninja: I’m predicting Andrew Bolt’s show won’t do too well this year. It is simply too long now, plus the fact that the Right is now in power has taken the sting out of the show. Having Bolt agreeing with Abbott for almost 30 minutes was boring and fairly predictable.

  8. @AndyG while you may think the demo for Downton may not readily torrent it, but it just takes a grandchild or work colleague to either teach them or do it for them. And the difference between Seven and PBS, PBS actually respect their audience.

  9. @maxxdude I can’t really see Downtown’s core audience being one that readilly torrent’s. (lets say its more of a “total people” show rather than a 25-54 demo darling

PBS delays the boradcast in the states as well (season 4 just finished there) and they have had record ratings this year with the finalie being TV’s third most watched show of last Sunday night behind the Winter Olympics closing ceremon and The Walking Dead

  10. ‘The Block hit a new season high’….which goes to show…the viewing public love the fights, tantrums, bad language etc….*sigh*
I suspect many would record Downton Abbey…especially if it was running late….I am watching it shortly…after Oscars…on SEVEN catch up.
And speaking of Precious…the star of that movie is presenting at the Oscar…as I type.

  11. Anyone who is interested in Downton Abbey would have already found a way to watch it online.Seven is being punished firstly by not fast tracking this show & secondly by Nine who have a great show in Fat Tony & Co.

  12. Channel Ten should not have put The Graham Norton Show on a Sunday night after it had been beaten by Fat tony and Co, Rake and Downton Abbey. They should have shifted this show to a Saturday night.

  13. I rarely wish ill on programs because we all like different stuff, but I’m glad that the faux-Schapelle thing on Sunday Night tanked. Ugh! Schapelle and INXS?, that’s a good line David as “in excess” is exactly how I would describe the whole thing. I wouldn’t watch if they had her on The Daily Show with the casts of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. Blech.

Have You Been Paying Attention? I think that question has been answered.

  14. @billy663 If they just kept doing Instant restaurants again and again I reckon it would get boring too. 1.62 million is a good enough number, Seven don’t need to change the show at all.

  15. If I remember correctly, this happened last year also.
After the instant restaurant rounds, the numbers fell off and Block came at them.
I dislike MKR after the instant restaurant rounds because it feels like Masterchef revisited.
On another note, SBS should be applauded not only for their Mardi Gras coverage, but also for their excellent American Indie Film Festival that is screening on Saturday nights. This week was Drive (an excellent film I hadn’t seen) and next week is Precious, another film I missed and will certainly watch. How is SBS able to afford such quality?

  16. “The thought of any follow-up story with her reuniting with her mother would be better served by having Schapelle reunited with INXS.”

Can I nominate this for a new category in the TV Tonight end of year survey called ‘David’s best one liners’?

  17. I love The Block and it’s good to see it getting higher numbers. But more importantly it was good to see the twins offering a good example to kids that when you work hard you get rewarded (as they did by winning Sky High), but when you slack off and rely on others to do all your work you get punished (lost the room). Going to the pub, making the subbies do all the work, blaming everyone else for mistakes that somehow other couples have sorted in advance are all examples of poor role models.
On a more positive note, SBS2’s coverage of Mardi Gras was perfect, with the interest stories after the floats absolutely brilliant and far better than Arena’s last broadcast. Here’s hoping they also get 2015’s parade!

  18. Never expected to see Downton Abbey under 1m. The late starts are starting to hurt Seven’s post MKR dramas. I suspect that they lose some of their older viewers who don’t watch MKR and those who go to bed after 9.30.

  19. The block was so good last night. The bathrooms looked great and it was good to see the twins do poorly. No wonder it rated so high.

IMO MKR gets a bit boring after the instant restaurants. They should just keep doing the instant restaurants until there is only 1 team left.
