Timeshifted, replays, catch-up, and all that drama

How many more viewers sampled Secrets and Lies after its first outing?

2014-03-11_1343We now have Timeshifted numbers for TEN’s first episode of Secrets and Lies, and a better idea of how it has performed through its various platforms.

The Brisbane-based drama pulled just 404,000 viewers in Overnight rankings, which was a very disappointing debut.

There were 3 x catch ups during the week across TEN and ELEVEN which took the number to 750,000 metro viewers:

ELEVEN 38,959
TEN 231,181
TEN 77,239

Another 90,000 Timeshifted the episode in the 7 days after its broadcast. That’s a lot less than Love Child (285,000) and Revenge (204,000) but still a significant number.

These take the Reach (the amount of people who sampled the episode) to more than twice its first outing.

TEN also says there were another 211,000 “video views” -however “video views” equals per segment, not per episode. It probably needs to be divided by about 5 x segments, give or take.

Collectively, these demonstrate the different ways we are all now consuming content and they apply to most shows we are watching.

Of course everything must still be put into perspective.

If we add up the catch-ups, Timeshifting and video plays for Love Child it would still dwarf Secrets and Lies. Despite those accrued eyeballs, last night’s second episode dropped in overnight rankings from 404,000 to 366,000. In the show’s defence most dramas do lose some traction after their debut.

Dramas continue to be the biggest drawcards in Timeshifted viewing and TEN will also be looking in anticipation at the next batch of numbers for Puberty Blues.

  1. I’d not heard of S & L until yesterday, most probably because I’d given up on TEN as having anything worth watching ever. So after reading an article about it I watched eps 1 & 2 on TenPlay, and wow, what a great series! DVR set for the remaining eps.

Irwin is a very good writer, he has produced two well-regarded novels and several TV series (including the great concept but less than stellar execution of Strange Calls). The cast of S & L is excellent and although the basic setup is similar to Broadchurch to say it is any sort of ripoff of it is to miss the forest for a single tree. Not to mention that it’s good to see a story told from the prime suspect’s POV for a change, I’m getting very tired of almost every murder mystery being about the character of the detectives and their personality defects, etc.

The character development seems to be proceeding a rate quite in line…

  2. Ten has problems on Monday and faces tough competition.

But Secrets and Lies is a badly written Broadchurch clone (one of many). Irwin has never written anything of note and it shows.

The first episode was shot as being entirely about Ben — except that they removed any facts about the case that he would have know to contrive suspense.

In one hour they did no exposition or character development . It consisted entirely of manipulative melodrama about an evil looking cop harassing and tricking Ben. Even if the cop is convinced Ben is guilty he wouldn’t act that stupidly. Though it apparently fooled 85% of the Tenplay responders.

Then it ends with a supposed shock announcement from a character we know nothing about yet, that in a contrived way avoided naming the suspect, whom we probably haven’t even been introduced to yet!

In 60 minutes they introduced only a few…

  3. Interesting how Secrets & Lies managed 750’000 first week views but still dropped from 404’000 views in it’s Second week! I think it’s good but nothing original or fantastic.

  4. An avid Revenge fan so I’m yet to see S&L but am yet to see it (it’s on my PVR). Glad to hear its viewing numbers lifted David. I appreciate the write up.

  5. When you consider the number of views and eyeballs on the rather superb ABC iview platform, ch10 are still a distant 4th.

Despite the extra numbers for S&L, folk voted with their remotes for ep2, so it was not comsidered compelling, must watch tv drama….

  6. I’m sad that a significant number of comments made on this blog have been negative about 10.

And sadder still that often times I’ve watched a 10 show, enjoyed it, then come on here to read the responses of others who’ve enjoyed the show as I did. Only to read that a large number don’t enjoy seeing what I see & the ratings prove it.

I think I’ll just accept that what I want to watch and enjoy will be different from what the majority in Australia want to watch.

    1. Well, let’s not generalise. Yes there is a lot of commentary about TEN of late. While the network languishes in 4th place this is not surprising. We expect the network to be 3rd, so we all have opinions on how it can improve and win back our trust. The fact that so many are engaged in this debate is actually a positive. It means people care and want to see it return to glory. There are also posts which demonstrate a lot of love for TEN shows: especially Puberty Blues and The Good Wife. Many others note the young dancers in So You Think You Can Dance are deserving of some better numbers. This is clearly separate from scheduling issues. It is a dense debate. There are many sides, many opinions.

  7. Let’s compare apples with apples. If an advertiser wishes their ad to be seen by a million viewers they either have to buy 4 spots across 10 and 11 plus another on Tenplay, or they could just buy 1 spot on 7 or 9.

  8. some episodes of big bang theory have probably been played over 20 times and got 800k-1mil every time. hey that’s almost the entire population of Australia has seen every episode of TBBT. now Secrets and Lies reach seems just as catastrophic as it did before reading this article.

  9. My problem with Secrets & Lies is that it’s just basically a cliffhanger at the end of each episode, with a bunch of boring padding leading up to it. Still, I will continue watching it, just to see if it actually ends up going anywhere. It’s not as if there are any other long-form Oz murder mysteries on TV at the moment.

  10. Secrets and Lies first episode reached 750K viewers when you include all the encores and catch up. Love Child first episode reached over 4 million when these are also included.

  11. I found last nights Secrets and Lies to be dull in comparison to episode one (except for the last moment) and there are more inconsistencies. Why would the police let Ben visit the dead child’s mother if they still think he is the killer? Why are they not investigating the boys father, or even the mother? Why is it that no one in the street has been interviewed? Why have they not looked at other tracks along the wet path where he was killed? It better get better than accusing the one man.

  12. So put slightly differently, the viewing habits of people changed but the measurement is still a little old school.

Viewing habits being the way people watch rather than what they watching in this case.
