Actor James Rebhorn, seen most recently as the father of Carrie Mathison in Homeland, has died aged 65.

2014-03-24_1557Actor James Rebhorn, seen most recently as the father of Carrie Mathison in Homeland, has died aged 65.

The character actor died his home in New Jersey of melanoma.

Rebhorn had a prolific five-decade career, with more than 100 credits on screen and stage.

Film roles included Scent of a Woman, My Cousin Vinny, Meet the Parents, 8 Seconds, Independence Day, Silkwood, Desperate Hours, Regarding Henry, Basic Instinct, Lorenzo’s Oil, Guarding Tess, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Snow Falling on Cedars, Far From Heaven, Real Steel and The Odd Life of Timothy Green.

Early in his career, he had recurring roles on The Guiding Light, Search for Tomorrow, and As the World Turns.

Other television credits included Kate & Allie, The Equalizer, Wiseguy, Enlightened, The Good Wife, Blue Bloods, North and South,  and 30 Rock.

He had a recent recurring role on White Collar as Special Agent Reese Hughes, head of the FBI’s Manhattan white-collar crime unit.

There were also stints as attorneys on the David E. Kelley shows The Practice and Boston Legal and recurring roles on Third Watch, The Book of Daniel, Law & Order and Big Lake.

In the 1998 finale of Seinfeld he played a district attorney who prosecuted the show’s four main characters for idly standing by as a fat man was robbed at gunpoint.

“USA Network is deeply saddened about the passing of James Rebhorn, who so brilliantly played Reese Hughes on White Collar. Our sympathies go out to his family, friends and loved ones,” the USA Network said in a statement.

  1. I must admit I wasn’t aware that he was particularly ill. For me, he’s a bit like James Cromwell in terms of the variety of roles that he has cropped up in, in both film and TV.

    @MASH – that’s the first thing I recall seeing him in.
