Although there is no way i regard the Oztam system as shonky, I do agree with Ryan for once, those with meters should be changed regularly.
You know what, it would not make one iota of difference to the ratings and/or 10’s lack lustre perfomances.
23 million people in Australia and Oztam determines ratings based on 900 ratings boxes? Time for an overhaul of the ratings system. Puberty Blues is one of the best Australian produced dramas in history and deserves much higher ratings. It needs a stronger lead in. Sad to say but The Biggest Loser has had its day. Whoever decided to choose the contestants from the same town needs to be slapped because one of the best parts of previous sessions has been the conflict between contestants. This is missing this year because the contestants are either related or friends. The overrun of shows has gotten out of hand and is harming anything after 9pm.
I would like to know how often Oztam changes subscribers? Should be at least every 3 months.
Combined population of the 5 major cities = 15,588,118, by Wiki stats.
@AAAdelaide – Not Australia wide. The top 5 capital cities. The system is not perfect but it has more boxes per person than many other countries.
I’m sorry, but I have to agree with the others. I find it very hard to believe that out of the whole 22 million people that live in Australia, only 538,000 people tuned into a massively talked about and hyped up quality show.
Get rid of these people who are constantly watching only the news, reality TV and channel 7 ( ! )
Let’s start a new with the oztam boxes and see what people are really watching. Hell, even Neighbours may make a resurgence !
@trev: But even when MCA was rating over 2million per night, Seven and Nine shows weren’t rating 350k in primetime, and their 6pm news was still getting double what Ten were getting for Simpsons/Neighbours in that timeslot, as well as rating well with their breakfast shows and being equal post-8:30pm. So, you couldn’t really claim anything suss based on one show. Right now, Ten is behind on everything they do. Well, except The Bold and The Beautiful and the 5PM News, but they win those slots by default.
I don’t subscribe to these Oztam conspiracy theories either. Also, I can only speak for myself, but my support for contestants on any show has never been influenced by which State they are from.
@trev….you are bang on mate, so many people still in denial about the demise of the ch10 network….it has been on a long downward spiral for almost 2 years now, wake up folks
It was pointed out not that long age that when 10’s top shows were slaughtering the opposition during the early days of Masterchef and the like, there was not a peep from anyone about how unfair the rating’s system was. Now that 10 and its programs are failing miserably, all of a sudden the system is now being blamed for their pitiful showing.
The 10 Network is a part owner of Oztam and it’s only commonsense they wouldn’t stand for anything suss and/or illegal.
The rating’s system has been put under scrutiny so many times and although not perfect, it has been deemed to be within plus or minus 3% for accuracy.
Besides, last season, the longer Puberty Blues was on, the lower the ratings became. Some of you obviously regard it as top Aussie drama, please accept the fact that a much greater number do not.
@bettestreep – I agree somewhat to a certain extent regarding state vs state rivalries on MKR i.e barracking for the contestant that comes from the viewers home state, yet I go for the SA mums on MKR and I’m from Brissie!
Regarding the contestants on The Biggest Loser all being from Ararat, I’ve got my certain fave contestants even though I’m not from there.
I think people are more interested in their personalities rather than their home town on TBL.
Oztam need to change the metering setups totally now I feel. A clean sweep. The system can work with some extra data collected and gets near the mark but for the last 6 month it appears something has gone wrong.
I am glad that so many other people are noticing what I have felt for a while. Not necessarily Oztam’s fault. The people who have those boxes may just hate Ten or may be young and enjoy mucking around with the viewing to skew the results just for the hell of it.
A total shift may be the answer or as I have suggested be4 to augment results with internet based surveys that I for one would be willing to fill in daily/weekly. 🙂
If you believe those numbers are accurate you will believe anything. I agree with @ryan it’s very suss.
OzTAM #Fail
If your worth about $1.8b and the way to make more money is to control the ratings, I am sure I would find a way.
Bates Motel isn’t even in the top 20 on pay tv!!! That’s shocking.
@Rayne
I record lots of drama and watch it all the next day while recording more drama to watch the next day. Loving The Good Wife, Rectify, Secrets and Lies and will watch Puberty Blues tonight. Patiently waiting for Suits to return. As David said there is just so much for the PVR to do. Full of Love Child, Rake and The Moody’s for when there is free time.
@bette And it should come as no surprise that when MKR added the 3 ‘gatecrasher’ teams that they were from NSW, NSW, Vic. No surprise to me that they’re from the two biggest metro markets. Funny that!
Home & Away and The Blacklist were the only dramas to make the top 10, everything else was either news or reality. Drama is struggling especially with the reality shows not finishing until close to 9pm.
We don’t watch any of the reality shows and record drama to watch while those are on. How many others do the same I wonder…..
ryan and dan -totally agree with you.
Puberty blues would be rating over a million if it was on seven or nine.
Almost every show on ten rates below 500k nowadays – regardless of how good it is.
I suggest Oztam scrap all the existing people meters and start afresh. There is something definitely suss about these ratings.
And BTW, one of the biggest problems TBL has this year is that all of the contestants come from some country town in Victoria. Hard for viewers in NSW, QLD and other states to ‘barrack’ for the contestants. This is why MKR rates so highly. It uses the states rivalries to get viewers to ‘barrack’ for the contestants.
Similar problem with SYTYCDA. 16 of the Top 20 are all from NSW.
I know it sounds pathetic – but this is one of the reasons MKR rates so well.
This is all starting to look a little suss now. A show that so many couldn’t wait to see, was trending on twitter for hours after it aired and yet it pulls only 500k? I say ditch all oztam box subscribers and start fresh.
No surprise to see Inside Story take a dive. Hopefully Puberty Blues gets strong timeshift numbers.
The Biggest Loser is hurting its ratings. If The Biggest Loser cannot survive ratings war for this year, then Ten will axe this show.
Puberty blues did good by ten standards of course if it was on seven it would have atleast double those figures but if it rated 530k on seven it would be axed after 1 episode
How long does Biggest Loser have to go? All programs on Ten are suffering from a very weak lead in (plus the over runs of MKR and TB)
