Airdate: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

John Oliver has a new satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events on the Comedy Channel.

2014-04-11_1152John Oliver, former comedian on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, has a new topical half-hour comedy series on HBO, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

The 24-part satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events will air express from the US on Foxtel from the end of the month.

Each episode offers Oliver a unique platform to share his distinct perspective on issues facing the world today while also featuring a variety of special guests and segments.

An Emmy- and Writer’s Guild Award-winning writer, John Oliver was previously a correspondent for The Comedy Channel’s popular news series, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart joining the show in 2006. He first came to prominence as a cutting-edge political stand-up performer in the UK with a string of TV appearances and sold-out solo shows at the Edinburgh Festival. Oliver won the Breakout Award at the Aspen Comedy Festival in 2007 and went on to write and star in the Comedy Central stand-up special John Oliver: Terrifying Times, followed by the series John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show, which he has hosted for four seasons.

With longtime collaborator Andy Zaltzman, Oliver co-writes and co-presents the popular weekly satirical podcast The Bugle, which currently receives more than 500,000 downloads a month. He also has a recurring role on the critically-acclaimed comedy series Community.

Oliver’s stint as guest host on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in 2013 prompted critical raves. The New York Times called him “clever and winning,” while TV Guide proclaimed, “John Oliver shines.” The Los Angeles Times described him as “instantly memorable” and said, “John Oliver has proven himself funny in many venues.”

The 24 episode series will be produced for HBO by Avalon Television, with John Oliver, Tim Carvell, James Taylor and Jon Thoday serving as executive producers, and Liz Stanton producing.

Mondays from April 28 at 6.30pm on The Comedy Channel.

  1. It’s a good show – comedy with something to make you think.
Still occasionally watch on youtube his 3 parter from the Daily show on American/Australian gun laws – so funny even though so serious.

  2. He is the only viable option to replace Colbert.

With HBO it’d probably just be a one season pick up for now. I bet comedy central is going after him. So many people thought he was better than Jon Stewart when hosting the Daily Show.

  3. I’m glad Foxtel have picked this up, but why do they bother calling Showcase “the home of HBO” when so many HBO shows don’t actually air on Showcase? It’s an odd tagline for a channel that doesn’t exclusively hold HBO titles (Comedy & FOX8 among the channels I can think of)
