And so, the King is Dead.
Long Live the King. Whoever that may be…
The final scenes of S4E2 were, as we’ve come to expect from Game of Thrones, a shocker.
I haven’t read the books by George R. R. Martin so I most surely wasn’t ready for King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) to cark it at his own wedding reception.
That little runt has been due for his come-uppance since the show began, but wow what a way to go! While my jaw was on the floor at this turn of events I was also despairing at losing such a sinister villain. Jack Gleeson has been fantastic in as the brat king. I’m tempted to say the show will never be the same without him, but truth is, we’ve lost plenty of key characters in this bloodythirsty show.
But what now for Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage)? Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) was none too happy with her brother for supposedly poisoning her son.
Heads will roll.
What did you make of it all?

You couldn’t find two more polar opposites in Jack Gleeson and his character Joffrey. There’s a great interview with him at a university in the UK and he is such an intelligent and very humble person. He will be missed on GOT.
Thanks David, I am not preempting Mr Gleeson for an award or a nomination, but if he misses out on the latter ie best supporting actor or something like that. I would be a little disappointed.
Game of Thrones isn’t that unpredictable it was intended as a simple fantasy trilogy. A lot is foreshadowed in Book 1 about the Others, Bran’s visions and Daenerys’s quest as last of the Targaryens. Book 2 was Westeros ignores what is happening and plunges into a brutal civil war while Daenerys builds an empire with her dragons to retake Westeros. Book 3 when the children are grown up, the final conflict.
It’s just that book 2 ended up being 5 (or possibly 6) books describing the civil war and the years that lead to the ending.
The only shock was the manner of Robb’s death and the collapse of the North. But when you think about it it parallels Ned Stark’s death. Noble characters may try to act nobly but they don’t anticipate ignoble actions of others.
Tyrion being accused of Joffrey’s murder parallels him being framed for the attack on Bran.
@ David Knox, Would Mr Gleeson be eligible for any tv award in 2014-2015? I think he deserves some sort of official recognition. If he won something for his portrayal of Joffrey I would not begrudge him.
PS Damo7 – very funny and at Rutzie, George RR Martin implied that was the reasoning why it was called The Purple Wedding
He is certainly eligible for nominations. Whether he gets them or not is another question.
Actually, in GRRM’s book it is referred to as the “red wedding” – for reasons which should be obvious.
I’m guessing it’s called the purple wedding because that’s the colour Jeffrey’s face turned after he was poisoned.
Jack Gleeson should not quit acting, one of the best baddies ever….
I know the article referred to him as a runt, but inkeeping with the context and language of the show, the c-word would be more appropriate….or rather See You En Tea as i prefer.
Now if ch10 had some real money, this is the sort of edgy, massively popular series they should be airing
I know what you’re talking about and it was long overdue. Jack Gleeson who plays Joffrey, is planning to quit acting.
It was a ripper of an episode. I have read the books so I won’t spoil the upcoming plot lines. I have to say agree with David that Jack Gleeson has been brilliant in the role of Joffrey. I have actually found his portrayal the best of the lot, and that is saying a lot because the entire cast is excellent. and @Mr. J the events that happened in today’s episode in the books it is referred to as the purple wedding.
Don’t let George R. R. Martin plan your wedding
loved it. GoT really knows how to set the mood to let you feel something big is about to happen, I haven’t read the books, i was expecting joffrey to kick it at some point but i was still shocked. i see twitter has labelled it #PurpleWedding
People will still click on this article and act like Joffrey at you David for spoiling it. That being said, bit unsure about his death, while I would have liked to seen him toasted by a dragon, like you said it is a game changer, can’t wait to see what happens.
Aside from all the warnings, technically it isn’t spoiled because it has aired.
