How do you solve a problem like Sunday nights?

TEN slates The Sound of Music as a family movie on Easter Sunday -a move so surprising it just might work.

2014-04-11_1620Well this is different…

TEN is set to screen the original Sound of Music film as an Easter Sunday family movie.

The classic film will run from 6:30pm – 10pm.

While it would be easy to mock a network playing a 1965 film as Sunday evening fare as desperation, it is out of ratings and a long weekend -meaning the kids can stay up.

If TEN had gone and gotten the recent Live NBC version with Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer I would be hailing it as brilliance. That did so well NBC has already slated a Peter Pan follow-up.

But I’m inclined to think the Julie Andrews screening will probably work.

Of course if it pulls better shares than current programming that might be a little embarrassing. Should we then get ready for Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?

Or maybe Devil Wears Prada: The Musical?

  1. I would rather watch 4 hours of Sir Andrew Bolt repeats, but only with the dubbed in Sound of Music sound track, to enhance my penance for not observing ‘lent’ this year, but at least the numbers will be interesting.

    @catherine

Problem solved, tell your mum, and then send her over to ‘ Kochies’ ( SOM fanatic) house with a box of ‘pop’, as he will no doubt be watching it, as well as also providing lots of ‘corn’

  2. Yes, Jason, I know that David’s headline is a reference to the movie. Mine was also a “The Sound of Music” reference… and a “Welcome to Woop Woop” reference… and a “The Love Guru” reference… can’t face. 🙂

  3. @catherine – watch something else on another TV in a different room if you can’t handle it and it must be a movie that you can never get tired of, in this instance your mum. So you have tried to watch it before but gave up

  4. Wondering why we’re not seeing the 2012 Billy Zane “Barabbas” epic over Easter.
@Mac – The film runs 2.45 so 45 mins. of comms & promos. Pick up the DVD from the local library.
@danielgonline – It’s a play on a song in the film “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?”.
@randwick – ” something the younger demographic might not touch”. But isn’t TEN not after the “younger demographic” anymore?

  5. This is something the younger demographic might not touch with a 10 foot barge pole, but the older demographic, especially those 54+ could pick up … you should try to take the ABC head on TEN, as this is the best chance you have of getting your ratings back …..

  6. @william. Its a running joke in our household when the sound of music comes on. My brothers and my dad cant stand it and my mum loves it and sits there and watches it right through to the end and feels we all need to heat the songs. She never tires of it.

I am also yet to see the whole film in one go.

  7. Off the topic a little They used to at one time around Easter show the Ten Commandments.Been a while since those days but why not an up to the minute family friendly movie.Nobody wants to see a relic that has been done to death fifty million times over.

  8. @Shoudy Chen – I doubt that Ten will get ratings below SBS’s share. Since it goes for 3 1/2 hours doesn’t that mean bigger share with low ratings as this was the case for Wizard of Oz
@catherine- why won’t you tell your mum about it
@Karlos – they certainly have killed Super Sunday

  9. ABC in the US play this every Xmas eve and it pulls a good crowd.
Indicative of tens current situation will be the embarrassment of media coverage this will get if it happens to get them their best Sunday share of the year so far

  10. I’m 31 and have never seen this film , and still will not be watching it. I noticed ELEVEN had Mean Girls on this week. Surprisingly another film played too frequenty that I actually have never seen.

  11. When I was younger I was a projectionist and I screened this film two shows a day for 24 weeks, I never get tired of it.

I have got the VHS 4:3 version, the VHS 16:9 version and the DVD and the Blu Ray.

It would be easier to watch the Blu Ray but I guess I will watch it again, makes a change not having to do a changeover for the 12 reels.

And don’t forget the carbon arcs…..my how times have changed with no curtains, no stage lights and no showmanship.

  12. Ten have been airing family movies in the slot for several weeks with dismal ratings, so I doubt this would be any exception. Border Security repeats will still crush the competition.

  13. I’ve watched this movie so many times, that my head can’t bare to watch it again, having watched the Live version of this with Carrie Underwood i was cringing to say the least. But if I were to watch it again I’ll settle with the DVD so I don’t need to watch the tv ads
