Janet King holds her nerve for ABC1

Ratings: Audiences have voted with their remotes, for the Crownies reboot by ABC1.

2014-04-11_1022You wouldn’t know it by reading mainstream press, but Crownies reboot Janet King has had an excellent and consistent season on ABC1.

While ratings reports regularly trumpet the results of reality shows, quality drama is seemingly overlooked. The show premiered in February with 824,000. While the trend is often to see a downturn, last week it was 831,000 and last night it was 820,000. By contrast Crownies debuted with 706,000 in 2011.

It wasn’t ABC’s only success with The Checkout also consistently performing well, last night at 825,000.

Seven network turned around Thursdays with a share of 28.9% and Nine network 28.1%, ABC 19.9%, TEN 17.1% and SBS 5.0%.

Both Seven and Nine are now neck and neck for the week with Nine just 0.4% in front, not enough to keep its rival at bay.

Seven News was 1.14m / 1.01m then Home and Away (922,000), Border Security (587,000 in 3 cities), Million Dollar Minute (541,000), My France with Manu (472,000 in 2 cities), Strip the City (382,000 in 3 cities), and Downton Abbey (360,000 in 2 cities).

Nine News (1.17m / 1.06m) topped the night. Next for Nine were ACA (827,000), The Footy Show (726,000), Hot Seat (650,000), Top Gear (563,000 in 3 cities). A Fat Tony repeat was 196,000 and Big Bang was 195,000 / 151,000 in 2 cities.

ABC News (846,000) led ABC1 then The Checkout (825,000), Janet King (820,000), 7:30 (737,000), Grand Designs (383,000).  Accused was 251,000.

TEN Eyewitness News (621,000) was again best for TEN then The Project (514,000 / 372,000), Law and Order: SVU (446,000 / 355,000), So You Think You Can Dance Australia (411,000 / 353,000).

On SBS ONE it was Mexican Fiesta (268,000), Gourmet Farmer (240,000), Exploring China (213,000), SBS World News (131,000) and Life of Crime (113,000).

Ben and Holly did it again with 303,000 on ABC2.

Sunrise: 351,000
Today: 338,000
ABC News Breakfast: 72,000 / 61,000
Wake Up: 26,000

  1. A lot of my friends who could not be bothered with ‘Crownies’ are now watching Janet King and are liking the realism in the portrayal of same sex couple relationship. Well done ABC (and M Dusseldorp).

  2. Better numbers for SYTYCD, albeit still pretty bad for Channel 10.
Janet King has got better and better in the last few weeks, here’s hoping the ABC commissions another series for 2015.

  3. It is not even reality it is just MKR that monopolizes media coverage with recaps every day & breathless reporting of how it is the best show ever made.
No other reality show has daily recaps on Fairfax media (is it a commercial deal with Seven?)
Janet King is a great show as is Love Child & Dr Blake. If Miss Fisher was on a commercial network we would be getting another series for sure.

  4. Australian drama, done well, does seem to resonate with Australian audiences. I am surprised with the numbers that Love Child is getting (I thought it was quite ordinary). Janet King is real ABC stuff and has a solid following. This could be a better direction for 10, but I concede it is risky, expensive TV. If they get the story wrong – then it just adds to their list of failures.

Don’t know how anyone can watch these reality shows – tedium to the factor of 100 if you ask me.

Agree with Jake, The Checkout is a very good informative show. Potentially quite powerful in highlighting rip off and scaaams. If anything it has too much information to the point of information overload (that story on roaming costs was doing my head in). Still never complain about too much information – a nice change for once.

  5. I’m also disappointed in mainstream media’s coverage of Australian drama. They’re only interested in reality & Offspring it seems.
Meanwhile shows like Janet King, Dr Blake and Love Child are all but ignored.

  6. It almost feels as though TEN have just given up, sad really. Suddenly the numbers for The Shire and Being Lara Bingle are looking great…

A reboot of Battle of the Sexes stripped across weeknights would set themselves apart from the others and provide a good lead in at 6pm or 7pm!
