Studio 10 accuses Nine News of ‘lies’

Video (updated): Earlier this week Studio 10 took aim at Nine News over exclusive footage -but was it really worth it?

I missed this curious serve on TEN earlier this week, but it’s worth some discussion.

Studio 10 took aim at Nine News for using its footage of William and Kate with “First on Nine” branding, even going as far as accusing it of ‘lies.’

TEN broadcast live images of the Royals on Monday.

“We were the only ones to take the pictures live,” said Sarah Harris.

“Even after we pointed this out to Nine they continued to make the claim. That’s a bit cheeky.”

“Exclusive …it’s a 9 letter word” said Joe Hildebrand.

“And Nine is a 4 letter word,” she replied.

But Jessica Rowe was more polite in suggesting the show should simply rise above it.

Given Sarah Harris and producer Rob McKnight both worked for Nine News, I suspect Rowe’s approach will go down better with viewers than the point the show was trying to make.

Undoubtedly lifting news material unattributed is not on, but an industry scrap is better left for others to report via industry forums, than involving general public who watch a morning television chat show.

And did Studio 10 also acknowledge that footage of the couple walking in the Governor General’s garden on their day off has been branded an invasion of privacy?

Not really sure this was worth it, guys.

Update: Rob McKnight advises the show discussed the invasion if privacy in a segment the day before.

  1. so a former nine personality (journo) takes a pot shot… with the former 9 producer in her ear telling her to do so… and nines Sydney news readers wife says lets rise above it…. i think its funny… the TV biz is very tangled in relationships…. nice story… whats next?

  2. I think the topic is trivial and not worth discussing but its a fair slag. I don’t remember TVTonight making a fuss over Nine’s ACA targeting Ten’s morning shows, slagging the competition when its down whilst also promoting it’s own content. Nor when ACA also targeted Seven over their version of the Price is Right. Very poor “journalism” and in my opinion much worse than having a discussion like this on a panel show.

    1. With over 30,000 posts here trust me, the networks have all come under the microscope at one stage or another, including ACA. But I have one set of eyes so I have never claimed to see everything. If ACA claimed Price is Right was lying it would be newsworthy.

  3. This is so true channel 9 is full of lies because they are to desperate to be better than the other networks but really 9 will never get ratings unless they lie. That’s why people are better off sticking with 7.

  4. Channel Ten took some footage off Exclusive videos off Channel Nine. That is unfair for Channel Ten to peek through Channel 9. This is just copyright. Channel Ten has rare exclusive coverage of the Royals.

  5. They all do it. I am sure Nine did it when Sarah worked there. She never complained then. To be fair I think she was just having a little bit of mischievous fun.

  6. In an industry with such a small circle of employers this is a brainless act. Even harder to explain given the microscopic size of their audience – they’ll all likely be looking for work soon anyway. Well here’s one less place to send the CV. As for “first on” this or “exclusive” that.. has anybody bothered to ask what impresses the 50 up age group that is all that’s left watching TV? This is all a bit tiresome and will soon be as relevant as an argument about which is the better cassette manufacturer..

  7. Funny how Sarah Harris asked “Is it alright for a news organization to lie”. Does she live under a rock. All newspapers, television or radio, lie and stretch the truth daily in their reporting.

I’d go as far to say that rumor, innuendo and hearsay is what makes the news today, so why would she honestly think Nine or for that matter Ten would be honest with it’s viewers?

  8. Stupid issue for them to be squabbling over when there was a super-pool in operation and every network had opportunity to take them live whenever they wanted. Everyone had access to the same pictures!

  9. The average TV viewer would not give a rat’s about this. The average TV viewer thinks people on TV are half up themselves to begin with, so to watch TV people fight with TV people… yawn. Obviously the topic is near and dear to McKnight, but to use the show as an extension of his own Twitter feed is an extraordinary abuse of power. I can only presume he gets away with it because the show only has about three dozen viewers so no one’s too concerned what gets said on it?

  10. This is not an isolated incident, every channel (perhaps excepting ABC and SBS) take veiled pot shots at each other all the time.
This may have been a little more direct, but try watching ACA one night, and then TT the next.
It’s hilarious how they hint at each other’s selective downfalls.
The INXS program rated well for 7? Ok, so then 9 runs a feature on them the next night.
9 runs trash features about MKR? Cool, we at 7 will ensure that there is some heat put on The Block.
It’s like watching dogs chase their tails!

  11. “Update: Rob McKnight advises the show discussed the invasion of privacy in a segment the day before”

Typical B/S statement, because aired or not their privacy was intruded upon the moment the footage was recorded.

Its a shame that Ten was not as vocal about their intentions to invade someones privacy ‘prior’ to doing so, as they were afterwards.

  12. I quite like seeing Ten being a little more aggressive with their competitors. 9 and 7 have never hesitated using their tabloid current affairs shows and print media interests to drag down 10. 10’s PR department has always played too nice in a landscape that is anything but.

I also think 10 are determined to restore their news credibility so attacking 9’s white lies is part of that strategy.

  13. Studio10 is a great product and Rob McKnight should focus on building the viewership of his product rather than take pot shots at 7 & 9. Agree with Archie, McKnight comes across as very aggressive on social media and watching him promote his own agenda is tiresome. As Jessica said who really cares who’s first?

  14. I really don’t understand the executive producers tactics?

He worked at channel 7, left them to work at 9, trashed 7 then moved from 9 to 10 and is now trashing 9. There’s not many other networks to go to after this.

  15. @Jason
I suppose much would depend if it was one of those ‘blowup pillows’.

I wonder if ” Exclusive is a 9 letter word”, “and Nine is a 4 letter word” is a Joe Hilderband exclusive, but either way it has the hint of a rehearsed/scripted comment.

But all this may be entirely academic, because despite all the claims and counter claims, isn’t it a logistical fact that ’10 will always follow 9′

  16. On yesterdays news at five hamish supposedly crossed live to a reporter for Anzac Day but it was apparent that the reporter’s piece had been taped.

Time for Today to expose the deceit.

Time for Karl and Lisa to expoj

  17. I think this a ridiculous conversation to have on air, viewers wouldn’t give two hoots. Rob McKnight is always very aggressive on social media and I think it comes across as attention seeking and desperate. Constantly harassing other shows and producers, trying to stir things up. Just focus on the show, get over this crap.

  18. I believe 9 would’ve used this First in comparison to 7 and prob shows the contempt 9 they have for Ten, poor Jessica though felt sorry for her, got shot down as soon as she tried to have an alternative voice… I think in all debate we need to remember to give everyone a fair go, seeing far too much shutting down of conversations lately on news websites and some shows on a certain network if guests dare to stray from the agenda being pushed

  19. Wonder what the pillow talk was in the Rowe/Overton house that night.
The best I’ve seen so far was quite some time ago, a “First on Seven” over a piece carrying a “TEN Exclusive” caption.

  20. It seems that on Monday, Studio 10 will do the exact same thing its hosts are condemning: youtube.com/watch?v=W3LAxfL8qAc

The show is plugging an exclusive interview with Tom Meagher, Jill’s husband. They’re saying he “breaks his silence”, however he spoke to 7.30 after Adrian Bayley was sentenced: youtube.com/watch?v=joYAs2TAxt8

He’s also blogged about Jill and her killer in recent weeks: whiteribbonblog.com/2014/04/17/the-danger-of-the-monster-myth/

Tom Meagher is well past breaking his silence.

  21. Wasn’t Rob McKnight’s previous job to create promos for Nine News that would promote being first at all costs. I’m sure if he was working there still he would be defending any such claim a Network Ten morning show would make.
