Australia has performed, for the first time as a guest, at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Jessica Mauboy performed “Sea of Flags” to an audience of millions earlier this morning, in recognition of Australia’s devotion for the world-famous song contest. After wowing the crowd her performance finished with an astronaut bearing a double-sided flag.
Her number was preceded by a tribute that included a Live cross to Sydney today, and a hokey but amusing stage performance with surfers, koalas, drag queens and the Big Pineapple.
“They tried to sweet talk us, they tried to bring us gifts. Seriously, they will do anything to join the Eurovision,” said co-host Lise Rønne. Not wrong there.
Australia’s appearance as a guest in the Second Semi Final is not an official act, but can be viewed tomorrow night on SBS.
Former Aussies to have graced the Eurovision stage have included Olivia Newton John, Gina G., Jane Comerford and Australian-born Johnny Logan.
Eurovision airs 8:30pm Friday, Saturday and 7:30pm Sunday on SBS ONE (results published here Saturday & Sunday).

Given there are many Europeans who have made ‘their home here…including the first visitors….
We are many and from all the lands of earth we come’.
Thanks David, I was aware of that and also that there are a few countries who are members of the EBU but not actually in Europe. I suppose it’s more of a question about how far away you have to be before you’re not able to become a member.
I imagine that both latitude and longitude would be used to define membership!
That is one amazing set and lighting rig. And Jess did well too.
Bless!
Just awesome. If Israel can be considered part of Europe, it’s not much more of a stretch to include us. One day…
Israel is a member of the European Broadcasting Union. I looked into this once before but I think there are now latitudes that define the membership.
Jess did a great job. Bought the single straight after her performance.
MMM… Hope MTV don’t lawyer up about that “Moonman” just the kind of thing they would do.
Sometimes cheese is oh so delicious.
That was….cute! Not a huge fan of the song but its perfect for Eurovision. Kind of wished she sang one of her bigger hits, they’re perfect and showcase her talents more. Still love ya though Jess, proud Maltese/Aussie over here… oh, and I almost saw her knickers, careful!!!
