MasterChef return lifts TEN

Ratings: MasterChef pulls 874,000 for its season return but the night belonged to The Voice at a powerful 1.99m viewers.

Given the kind of numbers TEN has been attracting of late, it should spare the network some doom-saying headlines. The news is particularly encouraging given it was up against the might of The Voice (1.99m) and a home reveal on House Rules (1.09m). Interestingly, neither saw sudden drops in their audience.

Nine network share was 34.2% then Seven 27.5%, ABC 17.6%, TEN 16.2% and SBS 4.4%.

The Voice was #1 at a powerful 1.99m viewers for Nine followed by The Big Bang Theory (1.31m / 779,000), Nine News (1.3m / 1.21m), A Current Affair (1.19m) and Hot Seat (672,000). Footy Classified was 269,000 in 3 cities.

Seven News (1.36m / 1.2m) led Seven’s night followed by House Rules (1.09m), Home and Away (1.04m), Revenge (693,000 / 611,000) and a record-prize on Million Dollar Minute (665,000). Talking Footy was 63,000 (102,000 on 7mate) in 3 cities.

ABC News (870,000) topped ABC1 then 7:30 (817,000), Australian Story (784,000), Media Watch (732,000), Four Corners (716,000) and a disruptive Q & A (572,000).

Following MasterChef’s return, The Project numbers were a buoyant 717,000 / 444,000, then TEN Eyewitness News (634,000), Law & Order SVU (396,000). A 6pm Modern Family repeat was 331,000.

On SBS ONE it was Vikings (237,000), Mythbusters (187,000), SBS World News (151,000) and RocKwiz (141,000).

Neighbours led multichannels at 321,000.

  2. I’ve been watching interviews with George, Matt & Gary leading up to the MC premiere and I was quietly excited that they were going to get it right this year and thank goodness, they have! Quality cooks and while there are a few sad stories, it’s not as bad as years gone by or other shows…

  3. Masterchef got off to a cracking pace. 2 nights in and they’ve already decided the top 24. The first 2 episodes have been far superior to The Voice which has been awfully drawn out.

    Masterchef should see the final of Puberty Blues rate well on Wednesday and will be an excellent lead in for the return of Offspring. Ten should have brought a new season of Wanted back for Monday nights. Repeats of SVU just don’t cut it.

  4. Masterchef was just what the doctor ordered. By the second commercial break, we had more heart, passion, sincerity and talent than the entire last season of My Bitchin’ Rules.

  5. I don’t mind the sob stories on Mc. It tells us who these people are so we can understand then a bit more, Mc has always had sob stories so I don’t know why this season should be any different

  6. Have to agree with Evan43 and Jason.

    It seems that you can’t be a normal Joe with a desire to cook good food. To be selected you need a hook like poor background, make the family/kids proud, recovering from an illness, rough bloke trying to turn life around blah blah blah. Other than that, it was good to see the three amigos back again.

  7. Loved MasterChef last night. So excited for a new season. Bonus that 7 will play a replay of the week’s House Rules episodes both on Friday night and Sunday afternoon (same as what they did with MKR).

  8. House Rules has been underwhelming so far this year. Unless it gets better really quickly, it looks like I’ll be watching Masterchef and catching up on HR when/if I’ve got the time to do so.

  10. Masterchef usually starts off slow with the initial selection episodes. So those number are huge for Ten. Still leaves them in 4th spot with an 11.7/16.2% share.

    Two lots of Masterchef last year probably exhausted some of the shows loyal fans who this year they have been attracted away from the computers and DVRs.

  11. @Evan43 – Agree. My teens were starting to mock the “sob stories”. We really don’t want to know. It seems that you have to be an orphan, have had cancer, have a dream. Harsh, but that’s how it comes across. Qualifying on all 3 points I should give it a go. Otherwise, liked it. Gave 7’s HR the flick after half of the first ep.
    But, given recent times, well done TEN.

  13. It was clear the focus was on the contestants for the launch episode. I hope once they get those introductions out of the way, we can get to the actual cooking (as there was minimal amounts shown last night)

  19. Masterchef still has a loyal band of viewers, like me, but after the first 5 minutes of last night’s episode, I was already sick of the sob stories and the families of the contestants. And, George/Gary/Matt were almost too nice, as if they were trying to draw a contrast between themselves and MKR. More actual cooking and less tears, please.

  20. Well done Channel 10. Those figures for the project are incredible. It’s amazing to see that Aussies still love to see Rove on our screens he did well last night so I can’t wait for the rest of the week.

    I do have to say if I hadn’t recorded the voice I don’t think id be watching it they drag it out so much and repeat so much of it, it’s very tiring, so thankful I can fast forward through most of the crap.

    Also this year House Rules isn’t what I was after the contestants seem far to mundane which is a shame cause they seem like awesome people but I feel they aren’t the best for reality entertainment purposes. Hopefully they can prove me wrong as we get to know them more.
