Screen Shot 2014-05-15 at 10.09.22 am.jpgOffspring‘s return to TEN has won its timeslot drawing a buoyant audience of 931,000 viewers, one of TEN’s best numbers in recent months.

The show’s loyal viewers demonstrated they were still invested in the Proudman family after the turmoil of the death of Patrick last year.

Without The Voice to contend with, it proved to be a good night for TEN as MasterChef cooked up 889,000 viewers, although it was still third in its slot.

If the news was good for TEN it was bad for the ABC with dreadful numbers for Jonah from Tonga. It fell to a dismal 287,000, lower than Spicks and Specks and even a 6:30 screening of QI. It was also a significant drop from 414,000 last week.

Seven managed to win the night, including with excellent results from its multichannels.

Seven network share was 30.8% then Nine 27.2%, TEN 21.1%, ABC 15.8% and SBS 5.1%.

Seven News was #1 with 1.19m / 1.12m for Seven then House Rules (1.07m), Home and Away (895,000), The Blacklist (744,000) and Million Dollar Minute (570,000). Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD was 368,000.

Nine News (1.05m / 1.07m) was best for Nine then The Big Bang Theory (1.13m / 848,000), A Current Affair (964,000), Hot Seat (623,000) and Mom (615,000 / 582,000). The Footy Show AFL was 245,000 in 3 cities.

Offspring (931,000) topped TEN then MasterChef Australia (889,000), The Project (663,000 / 457,000), TEN Eyewitness News (645,000), and The Good Wife (404,000). Modern Family was 337,000.

ABC News (808,000) led ABC1 then 7:30 (705,000), QI (615,000), Spicks and Specks (416,000), QI at 6:30pm (391,000), Jonah from Tonga (287,000). An Upper Middle Bogan repeat was 189,000 at 9:30pm.

Walking Through History (278,000) was best for SBS ONE followed by One Born Every Minute (173,000), SBS World News (134,000) and The Bridge (110,000).

Seven had another good night on multichannels with 7TWO’s Lewis best at 356,000.

  1. I watched the whole series of Jonah from Tonga on iView before it aired on TV so I’m not watching it again. I wonder if the iView promotion is a factor in its low ratings?

    1. So how do we explain the big drop from Week 1 to Week 2? The same iview people would have viewed both. And in theory, their word of mouth should have given the show a good leg up. That’s why you do the online preview.

  2. This is 100% definitely the last season of Offspring. One of the editors tweeted he was on his way to the last ever wrap party for the show a few months ago.

Those Jonah numbers are not far off the repeats of Spicks and Specks on ABC2. If the ABC are looking for savings the bus ads they buy for Chris Lilley shows would be a good start. They should switch Jonah to later in the night with Upper Middle Bogan repeats. They will rate better.

  3. @Randwick
Not disagreeing Offspring is quality, it certainly is, but that doesn’t guarantee quality results. Lots of quality shows get horrible ratings.

Lots of awful shows get quality results too. Look at the numbers Big Bang Theory pulls

“proof that if you produce quality, then you will get quality results”

Could not disgree more. Puberty Blues was quality, as was Secrets and Lies. Neither produced ‘quality results’.

  5. @Den I hope it’s not the last season. The actors have expressed interest in doing more so if they can keep the writing team and key acting talent together, let it go for another year or two. Plenty of stories left to tell.

  6. Agree with the opinions on Offspring. Last night was really good, perfect mix of humour, sadness and awkwardness.

Given it will reach 65 episodes by the end of the season, I wonder if this will be the last season.

  7. Excellent show, quality drama shows that discerning viewers will watch.

Music shows I think are facing extinction because TV networks flog a genre to death.

Excellent report I read recently that a lot of professional singers are on “The Voice” goes to show that the amateurs have very little chance.

American Idol has dropped significantly in the ratings, it is only a matter of time before “The Voice” and The X Factor sink.

  8. So glad offspring is back.

10.30am and the footy show is yet to be posted to channel nines catch up site. That’s atleast 11 hours and no sign of it.

Tried to watch a few segments of wakeup while trying out the new tenplay app on windows phone. It needs an overhaul.
