SBS defends strong language on Insight

SBS says the 'C-bomb' used in a discussion on Free Speech was in context with appropriate warnings.

Screen Shot 2014-05-01 at 12.45.39 am.jpgSBS has defended its use of the C word by a forum participant on Insight this week.

The episode, which discussed Free Speech and proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act aired in an M rated timeslot with a ‘strong coarse language’ warning.

But audience member Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson said it should have been bleeped.

“It wasn’t appropriate, regardless of the context, and there was an expectation that it was probably inappropriate to say on national television,” he said.

SBS spokesman Nick Craven said there had been no formal complaints received and just one call to the station.

“The word in question was not directed at a particular individual, but was used by a guest to illustrate a point in the context of this debate,” he said.

“SBS reviewed the program carefully and determined that it was appropriate to include the statement in its entirety, to maintain the integrity of the discussion.”

Earlier this week Eddie McGuire said his use of the word on FOX Footy was a slip of the tongue.

  1. You’re kidding – Tim Wilson, our new Commissioner for free speech, objected? Surely if we all have the right to be bigots and express our bigotry freely, we must also have the right to be foul-mouthed from time to time. Question is, which causes the greater offence?

  2. If there are any phrases that should be banned it’s the “C-bomb” and the “F-bomb”. They’re far more annoying than the words themselves.
