“How lucky am I?” Today toasts Georgie Gardner

Surrounded by her "two families," Georgie Gardner farewells Today, but not before a secret is spilled.

The secret is out. Georgie Gardner stays up at night eating chocolate and falling asleep to movies -but still manages to look fabulous on the Today show every morning.

It was her children Bronte and Angus who let slip on their mother’s private habits as she farewelled the Today show after 7 years, this morning.

Joined by her husband Tim, and the Today crew, Gardner said she was “blessed” to be surrounded by her two families.

“How lucky am I?” she asked.

“You mean the world to me. You’ve been the most extraordinary colleagues I could ever wish for. Thank you for make me feel like I can just be me, because that doesn’t often happen in the workplace.

“This isn’t goodbye because we are forever entwined because I’ve had this experience.

She thanked the production crew for all their work, with special thanks to the team in hair and make-up.

“We come in at these most ungodly hours and everyone always has a smile on their face and has always been incredibly generous and lovely towards me,” she said.

“Trust me, all you women out there, I don’t come in looking like this.

“And to you watching, the messages you have sent in, you’ve embraced me and I thank you so much.

The show also included a tribute from performer Ian Moss, and her favourite pandas on set.

But Gardner will remain with Nine News, back on deck as early as Sunday, but is looking forward to more time to spend with family.

“The children actually jumped into my arms and said ‘Mummy that’s great news’ and I’ve got to tell you, I’ll never forget how that feels,” she said.

But she finished with a quote by US author Maya Angelou, “People will forget the things you do and the things you say… But people will never forget the way you feel.”

Nine has confirmed Sylvia Jeffreys as the Today show’s permanent news presenter.

  1. She is a class act & for all the doubters who say the Today cast don’t get along…watch Georgie’s farewell online.
You can tell they all have great affection for each other

  2. I didn’t see the whole show but I thought it was a tad overdone. She is still going to be on the show as Lisas replacement when she goes on holidays so its not as if we are never going to see her again! Wonder what they will do when Karl finally leaves? I thought Deb Knight would get the gig seeing as she fills in every Monday for Georgie.

  3. Sylvie Jeffreys will soon be Karl’s sister -in -law as she will be marrying Peter Stefanovic. This show certainly likes to keep it in the family.Sylvie is a very average news reader..She often punctuates her sentences with unnecessary pauses and lacks feeling when delivering a story.

  4. @ Barrie T, the full quote is actually supposed to be,

People will forget the things you do and the things you say… But people will never forget the way you made them feel.”

  5. There were only 2 reasons for me to watch Today – Lisa and Georgie. So with one of them departed, i can not tolerate the others. ABC Breakfast is far superior, for my needs anyway! I think Georgie is a huge asset to her network. A really good and delightful presenter. Smart, compassionate, warm and authentic.

    1. Maybe a case of damned if they do / don’t. Today has been criticised for being too blokey, and Jeffreys has been the weekend news presenter, so she was arguably the front runner. There would have been an outcry if a bloke had gotten the gig I’d say.
