Questions raised over House Rules contestants

House Rules contestants have additional properties that may belie their TV image.

2014-06-24_2211Questions have emerged over properties owned by House Rules contestants that appear to belie the way their characters have been portrayed on the Seven show.

Woman’s Day reports six couples own at least two properties, with WA’s Carole and Russell owning real estate valued at $2.3 million.

Yet the show portrays the contestants as battlers, who will have their mortgage paid off if they win the show.

The rules of the show require that their renovated house must be a contestant’s “primary home.”

The magazine claims Carole and Russell have amassed a $2.3 million property portfolio, with a waterfront property currently on the market for $1.17 million. They are also joint owners of a luxury apartment with a $650,000 price tag.

Bomber and Mel reportedly own a house each in Adelaide, both worth around $400,000, totalling three homes between them. Lisa and Adam also own another four-bedroom house worth $520,000.

Queenslanders Maddi and Lloyd have denied claims they owned two properties.

Tasmanians Brooke and Grant were noted as genuine “Aussie battlers” struggling to pay off their $262,000 family home.

There are also numerous claims about contestants not being genuine home residents of the houses they are renovating.

Seven declined to comment to TV Tonight.

  1. @Poida
Nine and the Germans can work together if they like. A lot of businesses do that. The magazine damages Sevens reputation and Nine rewards them with an exclusive interview with one of their stars. Simple business. We don’t know why only a story about House Rules. The other programs are not more realistic!

  2. Why is anyone surprised ? The contestants were picked for their on screen talent, not their back story.
Of course they will renovate their crappy investment properties and go along with the “story” foisted on them by producers…that they are ” doin it tough” etc etc.
I would have thought everyone’s properties would be able to be investigated through Title Deeds office, I’m sure any Real Estate agent could find this out in no time.
Oh , and the contestants on MKR don’t always cook in their own kitchens…shock horror! Get over it.

  3. Worst thing about this rubbish story is the gullible readers who believe the crap they read. No suprises that woman’s day is affiliated with channel 9!!! The network will do anything to become the number 1 rating tv network it was once.. long ago!

  4. The premise of the show is to assist those that have bought the best they could, not to assist those with investment portfolios that need some propping up. If it is true, whatever the source, channel 7 should disclose this

  5. According to this: news.com.au/entertainment/tv/womans-day-claims-house-rules-couples-arent-struggling-at-all-and-most-own-two-or-three-properties/story-fn8yvfst-1226965312480

Carole and Russell’s apartment was actually the property they were put in by Channel 7 during filming, not theirs at all!

  6. Is it all about ‘Reality’ or is it ‘Realty’ ??, and does the power of an ‘ i ‘ depend entirely if all those involved can honestly say ” i am telling the truth”

The only real thing about ‘Reality Shows’ is that they are mostly ‘Unreal’, and as it has been proven before and will be proven again, the ‘ Real Story’ will eventually become ‘ A Warts and All Reality of Life’.

  7. This “story” was “reported” on over a month ago with channel 7 allegedly confirming one couple owned other properties. True or not, I can’t understand why people watch this rubbish.

  8. What a pile of rubbish this story is. The majority is not true at all. Doesn’t surprise me though. Its Woman’s Day at their very best and what’s funny is people actually believe it. Its crap. That is what it is.

  9. Adam and Lisa also posted a statement on their Facebook page saying it’s rubbish and a complete fabrication. Given Woman’s Day is the source of the story I pretty much take it with a grain of salt.

  10. A complete Womans day pile of rubbish (again). Heard interview with Adam on Melbourne radio yesterday saying its not true.
Its despicable how low Channel NIne(womans day puppeteer) will go.

  11. Read this on monday night in womans day, i couldn’t believe what i was reading, every single couple have other house, they are not struggling at all, there only reason they are struggling is because they got themselves in debt because of own too many houses, shame on Channel 7, with the constants they have this season, ,hoping next season they have proper constant that are really struggling unlike these constants, out of the two seasons ive seen so far, i prefar Season 1 constants over season 2 easily

  12. They’ve made no secret of the fact Caorle and Russell (and Maddie and Lloyd) are experienced renovators. As such it’s not too surprising they’ve got other properties on the market.

  13. Isn’t this a channel nine publication? Also I read somewhere that Adam would like to know where his second home is. This is just a beat up from nine as HR is beating The Voice.

  14. Adam and Lisa also denied owning a second house on their Facebook Page. They said, “Well done to the rivalry station publication who has fabricated such lies. Not sure how you can get away with such rubbish. Once you have finished defaming – Can you please tell me where I can get the keys to my “other home” and where we have been living for the past two years?!”. And it’s not the first time Women’s Day have fabricated a story like this before…

  15. This is extremely disappointing. Makes watching the show pointless now. Last years teams (seemed) so genuine about their battle to pay off their mortgage. So whoever wins from here is just helping towards making their millions? Good on you channel 7!

  16. The whole season has seemed staged this year. Once you know they all own 2-3 properties you can see they put forward a rundown investment property for renovation. Then all interest vanishes.
