  1. Ten shouldn’t move their 5pm news to 6pm. Ten Eyewitness is winning its timeslot and people like it.
If Ten moved it to 6pm, people would be furious. It would like that time they aired Renovators in the middle of the Masterchef finale.

And people always criticise Ten for making lots of schedule changes. Moving news times counts as a schedule change.

Ten are starting to do well now and get some good ratings. The last thing they need now is some negative publicity.

  2. oztvheritage

Yes it was a long time ago…in the mid 1980’s…when Ten had news at 6pm that was invested in, respected….and Number 1. And helped Ten for the rest of the evening.

It’s great Ten is making progress recently…but thinking long term….I can’t see Ten ever getting higher than low 20’s without their main news at 6pm given peoples need for news between 6-7.30pm

It would not be a success straight away. viewing habits would take time to change.

Personally I think the big issue is…..Ten cannot afford the time for their news to develop at 6pm if they did move it. It helps their numbers at 5pm currently and the initial drop they would receive at 6pm…they cannot afford.

  3. Secret Squirrel

    @oztvheritage – huh? That’s easy to explain – they don’t.

When was the last time Ten rated high 20’s or low 30’s, even occasionally? It hasn’t consistently had those sort of numbers for years. Most nights Channel ten is well under 20% and the network as a whole is in the low 20’s.

  4. OK then…Can anybody explain how else does Ten rate high 20’s/low 30’s constantly with a News service at 5pm when 2.2million out of 2.5million people want to watch news a 6pm??

    • TEN would be very happy with high 20s and lows 30s… but the reality is their share has been languishing under 20% too often for too long, including many weeks under 15%. Ratings share is also tallied from 6pm – midnight. Don’t disagree that most people want a 6pm news, but TEN offering 5pm or ABC offering 7pm has worked out well for both.

  5. Secret Squirrel

@AAAdelaide – I think I just heard italianguy1987 scream. For the 97th time, CBS agreed to go halvies in Eleven provided Ten moved Neighbours to it. Until that agreement ends, or Ten renegotiates it (might happen sooner than later), Neighbours will be staying on Eleven.

  6. I actually wish TEN would put Neighbours back on the main channel. It’s an insult to the brand that they moved it to ELEVEN, and it’s since lost it’s spark and fuss. The new generation don’t watch it on ELEVEN and the old loyal viewers get lost in the digital channel. When was the last time we ever saw Neighbours grace the cover of the likes of TV Week? Come on TEN.. do the show justice and give it the respect it needs and bring it back home.

  7. “Yes I know Ten have tried it before(in the last 5 years)….news at 6pm..But they also had news on at 5pm…so who would watch both”

    Wrong!!!!!
In early 2011, Ten tried a stand alone 6pm bulletin on weekends, with no 5pm bulletin. Here are some ratings from that experiment.

    Saturday 12th February 2011
    Seven News – Sat Seven 1,128,000 316,000 275,000 239,000 135,000 163,000
    Nine News Saturday Nine 947,000 290,000 291,000 184,000 104,000 78,000
    Ten Evening News Sat Ten 166,000 49,000 42,000 21,000 21,000 32,000

World News Australia had 191k on that same day.

  8. @David Knox – you summed it all up. 5pm news is a winner. Only room for 2 news services at 6pm. Ten won’t go back to 6pm, would be suicide. 🙂

  9. oztvheritage

Yes I know Ten have tried it before(in the last 5 years)….news at 6pm..But they also had news on at 5pm…so who would watch both.

If Ten did move their news to 6pm (from 5pm) it would need investment in news to win viewers back. But it would set them up for the rest of the evening.

News is still the most watched program on TV. And Ten have it at the wrong time.

The point i was making was – whatever Ten puts to air between 6 and 7.30pm. It will never rate like a quality trusted news service would and hence they will never rate as high as 7 and 9 do….even if they have high rating programs post 7.30.

  10. oztvheritage: I have said this before and I will say it again. You are forgetting one crucial point. People want to watch news at 6pm and they want to watch it on Seven or Nine. Ten has already tried News, Negus and The Project at 6pm, and they were all failures, so other than a few people on the internet, nobody wants any brand of Ten News at 6pm. If Ten did another news bulletin at 6pm, it would rate even lower than Modern Family repeats and they would still be a distant third in that timeslot

  11. @oztvheritage
Ten did terrific for most of the last 25 years showing something other than News at 6pm. They had the largest profit of the 3 commercial networks.

It is only since digital fragment the younger demographics that Ten has had problems. Their recent failed attempt at evening news and current affairs proves that there is only room for 2 news at 6pm.

Ten’s mistake was moving Neighbours to Eleven because it was rating poorly. They didn’t know that secondary channels and DVRs would fragment the market so that Neighbours low ratings were now good, or less than half its fans would follow it to Eleven.

  12. @oztvheritage – TEN have tried all that be4 and when I still worked for them 5pm News went from 5pm to 6:30pm, then the Project.

It did not work as people watch the news they want to watch or the news they are used to watching. 7 &9 have tried earlier news to link to their 6pm and that failed as well for them for exactly the same reasons.

TEN is on track to improve their ratings and all they have to do now is get half a dozen new top programs to boost their offerings.

Good to see M/Chef at no3 program and lead all 3 important demographics – well done 🙂

  13. italianguy1987

If 10 did move their news to 6pm instead of 5pm, it would still loose out to 7 and 9. Their coverage of the news is far superior to 10.

I love 10 and dislike shows on 7 and 9 and watch 10 like 95% of my time but their news is not as strong.

  14. Thursday nights show exactly why TEN will never be a rating winner while they have news at 5pm.

Ten is competitive after 7.30pm…..in fact win the night. but loose out big time to 7 9 and ABC between 6 and 7.30 because people arrive home and want to watch the news of the day. And as a result….Ten come a distant third for the evening.

Moving there news to 5pm was a stupid decision 25 years ago of which they have never been competitive since.
