Angry fans petition Seven to save A Place to Call Home

Seven is under attack by fans angry over the axing of its hit drama, venting their fury online.

2014-07-12_2047Fans of A Place to Call Home remain unimpressed by Seven’s decision to cut the show loose after just two seasons, taking to social media to vent their anger.

Tonight the show starring Marta Dusseldorp and Noni Hazlehurst will wrap all its storylines with the footnote, “The End.”

Seven has indicated the decision not to pursue a third season, which had been in development, was made by the Programming department. It declined to confirm that a third season had been written by creator Bevan Lee.

Last week the show rated 957,000 viewers at the later time of 9:30pm.

But costs and an older-skewing audience are said to have sealed its fate.

There are three petitions at change.org at over 9,400 signatures while others have taken aim at Seven on the show’s official Facebook page:

I heard it is being taken off because only the elderly watch it. So what we have a entitlements too.

It is disgusting that they can cancel the best and only decent show on tv

Wanted to spend millions on interview with Shapelle Corby, failed big time, no one interested in that only channel 7. Now to axe top quality viewing show? Agree channel 7 just cannot get their priorities right.

The decision to axe it is in very poor taste. Apparently the supposed highest viewing demographic is over 55, so it’s quite discriminatory against that demographic. No one asked me if i watch it.

This gets axed and they keep producing reality crap!!!!

Why are you not creating any more seasons? I was devastated to hear this news. Where are you running your surveys because you certainly haven’t contacted me!

I cannot believe they are taking this show off,it’s really great and I am going to miss it wish something could be done to keep it going.

Rumour has it Bevan Lee has fully written a resolution in Series3, but no.. end it on a cliffhanger! Well done. could have at least sold it to someone else rather then axe it.

The best show ever leaves those sic coms for dead

There must be a mistake. Where has all this come from? I don’t beleive it!!

A superb Aussie production, very, very popular; why would they not keep it going??? We do not have near enough quality Aussie productions on our TV.

Just can’t believe that this will not continue. So much better than reality TV, quiz or cooking shows. What’s wrong with supporting people who are brilliant actors? Please, another season.

It’s the Best show on TV why axe it? Axe all; the reality shows which are too boring with all the adds and stupid nonsense that goes on between them all. I’s fake.

Maybe Foxtel with snap this show up? I’ve gone right of Channel 7 for axing this show!

Others have let their feelings known on Twitter:

The last ever episode screens at 9:15pm tonight on Seven.

  1. Why do they cancel a great series like APTCH
yet still produce so much garbage that isn’t worth putting the TV on for? I thoroughly enjoyed APTCH and am very disappointed that it will not return. Another channel could pick it up? Not a bad idea!

  2. I have also registered to add my thoughts about the axing of APTCH. My family loves (or loved!) this show and feel that Channel 7 could have run with one more season to tie up loose ends. The finale was rushed and an absolute rubbish ending which as many others have pointed out, did not make sense given episode 1 season 2! Oh, and I’m not over 50, nor is anyone in my family. Not happy channel 7!

  3. I find it massively amusing that the networks are aiming towards the younger demographic when the young demographic are no longer watching FTA and no amount of hipster programming is going to change that.

They are online streaming, gaming and pirating they are not watching any FTA filled with endless advertisements. The only audience FTA have left is the the middle to older demo networks need to wake up and smell the coffee.

  4. Another first time registrant who registered to add my bit. I loved this show as it reminded me of stories my mother told me about these times. Also because we see so very little other content which is truly Australian. As a first time viewer to Channel 7 I wont be coming back. Its back to the ABC and SBS for me and no, I am not over 55.

  5. I always find it very telling when my site receives a higher-than-usual amount of first-time commenters to a story. When they actively seek out a site like this and go to the trouble to register, it is indicative of discontent amongst the wider audience.

  6. I am under 55 and I loved A Place To Call Home. Extremely disappointed by the news that it’s over. I can’t believe Channel 7 would just throw it away when they had a quality product and a keen audience. Very sad.

  7. The frustrating aspect about early cancellations like this is that you believe the hype and shameless plugging, give the show a go and then get invested. You’re a loyal viewer. We all understand shows don’t go on forever and obviously this was expensive to make (why else wouldn’t they just change time slots and days) but to then not resolve the plots and story lines we all fell for is really just dismissive. The ending didn’t make sense when bookended with the season 2 starter. We’re not stupid, treat us with a bit more of the loyalty we showed you and wrap it up. Maybe then we’d complain and moan about the series finishing but then put it to bed. You’ve left us in the dark, seven! I suspect the outrage may have been less had seven considered wrapping up the story and not just the series.

Oh, and I too, like many on here, have never bothered to comment on any post and…

  8. @ Tatiana….I so agree….and DK …I so disagree….I personally am a great consumer…I am mostly always willing to try new things….
I also have many friends who are just as adventurous ….not that many older folk are ‘stuck in the mud’….the sooner advertiser realise this …the better.

  9. I have asked this question before – do they think the over 55s are all broke? Is that why they’re ignored? That demographic are the ones with the cash to spend. They’ve paid off their mortgage, the kids have left home and suddenly they can afford to take life easy. Why on earth are they targeting the young ones who are crippled with mortgage debt, hex fees, raising children etc. I wish someone could give me a sensible answer to this because it makes no sense to me. And why does the ABC care about demographics when they don’t have advertisements?

    1. Seven talked up the virtues of an older demographic with a disposable income at its 2014 Upfronts, but it appears to have forgotten them now. Advertisers prefer younger because they are not as devoted to brands.

  10. All of the networks, including the ABC have moved away from catering to the over 55s. No wonder they’re struggling financially. Obviously young people, who don’t know what they’re doing are making these dumb decisions. And the networks are edging their way closer to bankruptcy.

  11. I’m so glad you cancelled this show. It finally gives me the incentive I need to stop watching television entirely and leave it to the mindless twits you seem to want to cater to. APTCH was a great show and I registered and comment here just to let you know this.

  12. I saw the final episode last night. It was very good, although the ending felt rushed and incomplete. So many stories were just left hanging. The producers obviously intended for another series to go ahead. It’s a shame 7 axed this show, because it clearly offered a point of difference with the other suburban, middle class relationship dramas that are on air at the moment, and the profusion of same looking talent shows and reality shows.Other networks like 10 would kill for ratings like this show gets,so 7’s decision to axe APTCH is puzzling and short sighted to say the very least.

  13. The way aussie drama are dwindling in a few years at the logies it will be neighbors v home and away for best drama.

At easter the actors said they had basically been told a 3rd season was happening and obviously now its not. It was a beautiful show and im still annoyed 7 ditched it.

  14. I am pretty pissed off about this. I am a bloke under the age of 50, who thoroughly enjoys APTCH.
Channel 7, I have zero interest in crap like Bogan Aussies Drunk In Bali, or the totally inane Home & Away or Winners & Losers.
And I doubt very much that a full series of The Killing Fields will rate anywhere near as well as A Place to Call Home.

  15. They promised closure but there wasn’t one which is good thing in a way as another channel can pick it up, or some “smart” bosses can realise that people over 55 still deserve good drama. I’m not over 55 and looked forward to every episode. It was the best Aussie drama on TV worth watching! You can chop off the rest of the scripted “rules” of all description, bored to death with lies and setup.

  16. Hi David Knox,
Any news that other channel be interested in picking up the series? Or even turn it into webseries by any chance? Surely ABC be a better place for the show. I even wrote on Sunrise FB page to ask if they can help bringing back season 3 as the ending last night was really not an ending at all…..

  17. Indeed, there’s always a place for extremely bad soap. I’ve been hugely entertained by A Place To Call Home. There’s Noni Hazelhurst setting new standards for scenery chewing… Spectacularly twisted morality (like the heroine disposing of a body without a second thought)… And some of the worst writing you’ll ever see on television anywhere. How about this gem from the last episode: Noni to Evil Regina: “Your hubris will be your undoing!” If you can get past the utter implausibility of anyone, especially a 1950s Aussie Battleaxe, ever uttering such a thing, it’s one of the funniest unintentionally bad lines ever written.

    1. It wasn’t the most sophisticated of dramas out there, but it wasn’t trying to be. It subscribed to melodrama, in all its histrionics and I think it ticked those boxes pretty well. Clearly has a fanbase that is upset.
