Clive Palmer walks out on 7:30 interview

Clive Palmer pulled a 'Joan Rivers' walk-out on Sarah Ferguson last night on ABC's 7:30.

Palmer United Party leader Clive Palmer pulled a ‘Joan Rivers’ on presenter Sarah Ferguson last night by walking out mid-interview on ABC‘s 7:30.

Ferguson began asking Palmer questions on his legal battle with a former Chinese business partner when he refused to answer her questions.

The mining tycoon is currently engaged in a bitter legal dispute with Citic Pacific that centres on cost blow-outs and royalty payments at an iron ore project in WA.

“Don’t talk to me about allegations and bullshit,” he retorted.

“I’m not discussing it with you any further, Madam. It’s subject to court proceedings.”

Despite Ferguson’s efforts, Palmer insisted, “I’m not answering any more for you, so goodbye, we’ll see you later.”

  1. In spite of his leading the “cheer squad”(figuratively) for Joh Bjelke-Petersen(long may he rot!) I’m starting to respect Palmer, a little bit, mind you, not too much! Saw the interview on ABC24 repeat last night. He was right not to answer questions on a case still before the courts, this is called “subjudice” and could lead to an aborted case and contempt of court charges for both Palmer, and Sarah Ferguson, and the ABC too. So Clive Palmer was doing Ferguson and the ABC a favour, as it were.

  2. Love this guy’s antics. He’s like a bumbling uncle (though none of my bumbling uncles have amassed a fortune).

I’m starting to think, his TV presence is just part of his shtick, which the media laps up. This allows him to get away with ending an interview, abruptly. I mean, is anyone surprised that this happened? Surely this is what we’ve come to expect (and accept?) from eccentric Clive.

The focus on his eccentricities also means that he shoved a cracker up the government’s ass and no one saw it coming, least of all, the media.

I’m liking the Clive Palmer Show (and I hope he gets the $600 million, he mentioned, from the Chinese. I don’t know what that’s all about, and I’m not interested in finding out, but I hope he gets his ka-ching moment).

  3. He gave madam an answer “It’s subject to court proceedings.” As she persisted, good on him for ending the interview. Should be more of it.
“who the hell calls anyone ‘madam’ these days….what was that about?” It’s called “manners” and “politeness”. Don’t see much of it thesedays. Myer staff are trained to call customers “sir” and “m’am”.

  4. Er, Jezza, Clive Palmer does not sit in the Senate. Glad to see you have your finger on the political pulse.

As for leaving interviews, well it’s great theatre for television, and I think there should be more of it. If you make an adult decision not to continue the conversation, say so, and get up and leave.

And madam is simply a polite form of address – retail workers use it all the time.

  5. As much as we bag pollies on the left and the right, the do fromt up to interviews (most of the time) and then squirm and wriggle their way around the success or lack of…their policies.

If Clive Palmer can’t handle a few awkward questions without spitting his dummy, he is the wrong person for this game…..you need a thick skin. The blokes only been in the senate just over a week and is crumbling already….not good at all

As much as I was not a fan of Julia Gillard or her policies, she was a far tougher and tenacious person than Clive Palmer will ever be…
