Dear Channel TEN, please reschedule your 50 Years special?

TEN's nostalgic special deserves better than being buried on a Friday night.

2014-07-20_0030Dear Channel TEN,

I reckon you are under-selling your upcoming 50 Years Young Anniversary special.

Sure, I haven’t seen it, but I would suggest it is deserving of more viewers than the Friday night timeslot you have afforded it.

If Nine and Seven were marking their 50th Anniversary, they would rightly be singing it from the rooftops. So should you.

At the moment your 2 hour special is scheduled for 7:30 Friday August 8th.

But if I look at the rest of the schedule for that same week it’s pretty bloody thin.

Sunday August 3
6pm Bondi Rescue rpt
6:30pm Bondi Vet
7:30pm Modern Family dbl rpt
8:30 Extant

Monday August 4
7:30pm David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities
8:30pm Have You Been Paying Attention?
9:30pm (TBA)

Tuesday August 5
7:30pm Save with Jamie
8:30pm Under the Dome
9:30pm NCIS: Los Angeles rpt

Wednesday August 6
7:30pm The Bachelor
8:45pm Offspring final
9:45pm (TBA)
10:45

Thursday August 7
7:30pm The Bachelor
8:30pm Special: Mothers Who Murder
9:30pm Law and Order: SVU rpt

Friday August 8
7:30pm Special: 50 Years Young
9:30pm Movie: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy rpt

With your rich and quirky history of Number 96, Prisoner, E Street, Young Talent Time, The Panel, Big Brother, Australian Idol, Let the Blood Run Free, The Comedy Company, Thank God You’re Here, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation, Good Morning Australia, Neighbours, Rove Live (I could go on…) -why on earth would you bury it on a Friday night?

Instead we’ll get repeats of Bondi Rescue and Modern Family, or David Attenborough, Jamie Oliver and a special about murdering mums.

Meanwhile the TEN personalities and the TV critics who have been filmed for this nostalgic special will remind us why we have so loved you. Those old clips will light up social media. But on a Friday night?

C’mon.

We really loved those shows! They take us back to our youth.

I vote for 6:30pm Sunday.

Please let us relive them!

  1. Almost disrespecful to have this buried away on a Friday night.
Definitely should be scheduled for Sunday Aug 3rd at 6.30 pm or Monday Aug 4th at 7.30 pm .

HYBPA has had so many time changes already that one week at a later time wouldn’t make much difference…

  2. Yes Friday the 8th is crazy. It should be Friday 1st of August when they started broadcasting in Melbourne. If it’s on Friday it must be pretty bad.

They can’t muck about with Under The Dome (Tues) or the final of Offspring. (Wed). Sunday would mean writing off Extant. Monday it probably couldn’t do any worse than Ten’s other programming but they might have something else planned for after The Voice finished.

That leaves Thursday or Friday, much of a muchness these days because people stop watching live TV for the week around 9:30pm Wednesdays.

  4. What about a week long special (or a couple of days, until The Bachelor comes on – I doubt they’d move it [I wouldn’t care which way it falls])! It fills in the repeats gaps, and if promoted well enough (I know SCA will promote it well on their radio network), it could draw in an audience for the week, and maybe become a launchpad for new programs as well!

  5. Memo to TEN….Do Not muck around with The Living Room….it is steadily gaining numbers and moving up the ratings list….if you start messing it around, you will quickly lose those viewers you have gained…especially viewers like me…who have absolutely no patience whatsoever when programs I watched are moved around…delayed..etc…it happens all to often and I dont even try to be forgiving anymore…..Dont go there!
I am thinking Sunday up against singing shows may not be great?!?…I myself, would like Monday nightt….Thanks for the article DK…Cheers.

  6. Good on you for taking the lead on this David. It beggars belief that not only would they almost bury this but that they replace their best-performing show on that night. I ran out of sympathy for them a while back but it’s still a little sad to see them repeatedly tie their own shoe-laces together like this.

Ten, show some balls and brains, swallow your pride, put this on Sunday or Monday, and promote it.

  7. Considering there is nothing on Sunday nights anymore due to reality and “current affairs” on Seven and Nine, this would be a perfect alternative.
If it were on Sunday, I’ d PVR it and watch it on half hour time slip. If it were Friday, I’d PVR it and probably watch it three weeks later or end up deleting it.

  8. It’s 2010 all over again. In 2010 MC s2 sent ten to record highs, then the Delhi comm games came along and ten crashed to 4th place for the rest of the year. That schedule is absolutely hopeless.

  9. omg…
how telling that someone who owns/runs a tv-related blog can easily point out what might be better for Ten re the scheduling for this show 0.o

  10. Apart from the special and Offspring I don’t see any compelling reason to watch anything on 10 that week. I guess it will depend on what the other channels offer.

  11. I agree such a comprehensive special and its shafted to a Friday night? Who is running the TEN programming department? If this was Seven or Nine they would as you said David be running this with a tonne of promotion and would run it earlier in the week. I also think Sunday 6:30pm is perfect for the special. I hope TEN does reconsider and moves it to a better slot.

  12. Agreed. And especially when it means that The Living Room, one of Ten’s highest rated shows, has to take a week off.

Also gotta say Ten could have better utilised MasterChef to launch some new stuff rather than have so many holes in the schedule now.

  13. Has the slight ratings resurgence been more good luck than good management?

If Ten’s senior management has such little ‘faith and confidence’ in itself, why should viewers and stakeholders have ‘faith and confidence in them.?

What are they hoping for, regular ‘Living Room’ watchers and or those who have their recorders set for that time slot?

  14. I agree, maybe even get Bert to host now he has been released from Nine. It feels like it is being treated as something they ‘just have to do’. Sunday would be good, I find singing shows cringeworthy so I have nothing to watch until The Block restarts.
