Million Dollar Minute champ breaks new record

We have a winner, as Jonathan Maher walks away with a cool $510,500 cash.

Johnathan wins historyAnother Million Dollar Minute champion has walked away with half a million dollars, creating yet another TV record.

Jonathan Maher won $510,500 yesterday, pipping the $503,000 won by Pierre Sutcliffe in May. The cash is the biggest prize by an afternoon quiz show in Australian history.

Maher won the loot after several bids at the $500k prize, finally securing 5 correct answers with the question: Who played the title role in the 1994 movie, ‘Maverick‘?

“That last question had me stumped; I knew it was either Kevin Costner or Mel Gibson. If I had more time to think about it I would have chosen Costner and lost $500,000 but I had no time left so I just chose Mel Gibson without thinking,” he said.

It was one lucky guess.

Directly after his win newlywed Maher headed to the airport for a flight to London to join his wife. After missing the flight by minutes he booked his first Business Class trip to Europe on the next available plane.

“It will wipe the mortgage and leave me with plenty more cash… when I get to Europe I will say to my wife ‘Hi honey, I just won half a million dollars, how about a hug?'” he said.

“I think she will flip out.”

Maher is the second champ to win the $500k prize.

  1. PeterB, that’s because the show is filmed from Melbourne obviously they’re not willing to fly people from interstate for the show like Hot Seat is. They try to hide their tightassness by generally not revealing where the contestants are from as Hot Seat does.

  2. At last belated commonsense and much luck, finally overcame commercialism at its worst, where the contestant chooses to proceed, but the organizers choose the opponents and question categories????
