wdytSBS is said to be excited at the prospect of casting its 7th season of Who Do You Think You Are?

The genealogy series, produced by Artemis International and Serendipity Productions, has been giving SBS its best numbers since the end of the FIFA World Cup.

No formal announcement has yet been made but SBS is hoping the new season will take it to some destinations for the very first time.

This series has featured Andrew Denton, Rebecca Gibney, Jacki Weaver, Richard Roxburgh, Amanda Keller, Adam Goodes and Lisa McCune with Paul McDermott to feature in the final episode next Tuesday night.

The quality of the show attracts some of our finest names.

TV Tonight is happy to recommend its National TV Living Treasures for casting inspiration.

  1. @ victor…as stated,,,,participants have much more varied backgrounds than anglo/irish….Have your ever watched this show….I have…all episodes…and I do not think Christine Anu would appreciate your description…

  2. @Victor. Several of the episodes have shown the cast’s ancestors are from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB). Adam Hills – Maltese, John Butler – Bulgarian, Maggie Beer – German, Denton- Polish, even though their names and faces might look Anglo their background might not be. Of course you probably just saw their white faces and assumed. Have you actually watched this show?

  3. Victor I think you are missing the point. Much of it is about the surprising and diverse reveals many of which are multicultural. Jewish holocaust – Andrew Denton. Rebeca Gibney and a Maori massacre. Richard Roxburgh and slavery and racism. Adam Goodes – Indigenous story. Jacqui Weaver and mental illness etc…

  4. Such a fascinating program – great to see it doing so well.

You should definitely recommend your choices for the National TV Living Treasures, David.
Would love to see Gary, Deborah and Molly as part of next season’s WDYTYA.

Others I would like to see are :

David Wenham, Claudia Karvan, Dan Wylie, Julia Zemiro, Craig Mclachlan, Nadine Garner ,Damian Walshe-Howling ,Chris Brown, John Jarrett, Noni Hazlehurst, Dick Smith, Jana Wendt , John Laws or Akmahl Saleh.

  5. This is splitting hairs David. The point of SBS is that it was not created to represent the dominant cultural group in Australia, ie. Anglo Irish but sub groups defined by their ethnicity, language and their culture. This show with its white bread casting sits uncomfortably on SBS just as Top Gear did years ago. If SBS announced a new drama with no ethnic casting or storyline there would be an outcry. Why is a docusoap any different.

  6. The casting of this show illustrates the problem SBS has with its ethnic charter. The entire cast with the exception of one indigenous member is white Anglo. This white bread history reflects the previous 6 series of this show. I am amazed the SBS Board does not have a view on this. How about some family histories from non Anglo Australians that reflect the very reason that SBS was established as a broadcaster to reflect multicultural Australia?
