Tacky rapper comment before Lorde wins Best Rock Video at VMAs

"I can always get behind a lady," says rapper Trey Songz in reference to 17y.o. Lorde's entry in the Best Rock Video at the VMAs.

vmasrUS rapper Trey Songz at the MTV Video Music Awards was presenting the Best Rock Video at the MTV Video Music Awards when he made a tacky gesture that will likely attract comment.

Noting that the male-dominated category included one female, New Zealand’s Lorde, he said: “There’s even a lady in the mix. I can always get behind a lady.”

With that he nuzzled his groin towards co-presenter actress Nina Dobrev.

“He probably didn’t mean that the way that it sounded,” she blushed.

“Oh but I did,” he insisted.

With the audience predominantly young, it’s a line that will surely raise eyebrows, particularly given Lorde is still a 17 year old.

But the MTV Awards has always had its notorious moments from Madonna kissing Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, to a young Miley Cyrus twerking.

Lorde had the last laugh by winning the category.

Sydney boys 5 Seconds of Summer also wowed the crowd with a rousing performance of their hit, Amnesia, but missed out on the Artist to Watch category.

  1. There were several things wrong with this year’s VMAs (Lorde being nominated in the Rock category for example) but this wasn’t one of them.

And Trey Songz is a singer, not a rapper.

  2. I expect he was more interested in “getting behind” Nina Dobrev.

David – I’m not sure age matters. The age of consent in NZ is 16, and Lorde is 18 in November.

In the US, the Federal age of consent is also 16; and it is 16 is the signficant majority of States.
