Block, Big Brother double gives Nine the night.

Ratings: Nine's night of Reality ensures a win, while the return of Leigh Sales tops the evening on ABC.

BB Launch Night - 009Who says too much Reality is a bad thing? Last night Nine’s double of The Block and Big Brother ensured it won the evening.

The Block remains the real success story, scoring a whopping 1.56m viewers -its best Monday so far this season, and a number more usually suited to a Sunday ‘reveal’ episode.

Just how many of those were Big Brother viewers waiting for the launch is unclear, but thankfully it started on time at 8:40pm. The show pulled 1.07m viewers -while strictly speaking it was the lowest ever launch, none have commenced as late as 8:40pm before.

The show introduced us to mostly 20-something pairs entering a gaudy, bling-heavy House, but strategically affording some housemates manipulative power over others -including an offer of $20,000 to forgo food for the week. 4 more housemates, including a disabled contestant, enter the house tonight.

A Current Affair had a particularly strong night at #2 on 1.24m viewers while Leigh Sales and Have You Been Paying Attention? had some positive news.

Nine network won the night with 32.9% then Seven 29.1%, ABC 18.8%, TEN 15.1% and SBS 4.0%.

Also scoring for Nine were Nine News (1.21m / 1.18m) and Hot Seat (637,000). Footy Classified was 277,000 in 3 cities.

Seven News topped its timeslot with 1.21m / 1.14m for Seven then The X Factor (1.17m), Home and Away (991,000), The Amazing Race: Aus v NZ (634,000) and Million Dollar Minute (595,000). Movie: Anger Management was 201,000. Talking Footy was 19,000 in 3 cities (106,000 on 7mate).

Leigh Sales’ return to 7:30 topped ABC at 874,000 followed by Australian Story (872,000), ABC News (828,000), Four Corners (716,000), Media Watch (663,000) and Q & A (555,000 / 52,000).

TEN Eyewitness News (675,000) was best for TEN. The Project was 633,000 / 501,000, Have You Been Paying Attention? was 465,000 and better than its lead in Hidden Kingdoms with Stephen Fry (342,000). NCIS: LA repeat was 246,000.

The Real History of Science Fiction was 219,000 on SBS ONE then Countdown to a Catastrope (177,000), SBS World News (117,000), Legally Brown (97,000) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (86,000).

Neighbours led multichannels at 308,000.

    1. The number is correct for 3 channels, but shouldn’t be compared alongside titles on one channel. Q&A does not do this for ABC / ABC News 24 so I am happy to list them separately etc. Yesterday’s feature story suggests networks are coding strategically for headlines, so it’s probably unhelpful where headlines play along.

  1. This was the most interesting BB opening night I can remember, great to see that the games started right from the first contestant. I think the partner idea is a real winner and love the combinations they chose. There are some very appealing contestants this time around.
Someone mentioned before that Aus viewers are tired of “reality” shows … I am bored with all the cooking, renovation and “talent” shows, time they moved on to something new. However, BB and Dancing With The Stars are still able to keep me watching!

  2. By far the highlight of X-factor last night was the opening number. Dancing boys, Moulin Rouge style dancing girls, hgh kicks…Camper than Christmas! Loved i!

  3. I think Nine is doing much better this year with more viewers watching with the shows like the block showing against the X factor.
I think BB will keep on growing when it replaces the block when it finishes it run… X factor has lost many viewers this year esp in the major cities like melbourne and Sydney

  4. Found the Big Brother launch last night decidedly underwhelming .
Choice of housemates this year seem particularly uninspiring and many appeared even more fake and artificial than normal.
Will give it a few more days but not impressed so far…

  5. The Real History of Science Fiction was pretty good last night. Forgot to turn the TV back on for Brooklyn Nine-Nine again. Still think it should swap places back with Legally Brown.

  6. We watched SBS ONE from 7.30. We’re the “older generation” so the juvenile antics of BB and the soapy manufactured “drama” of The Block don’t interest us. I find myself watching Nine less and less…..

  7. Last night I watched tens 2pm episode of offspring. I think I’m enjoying offspring more the second time around. There isn’t much on tv at the moment that makes me want to turn the tv on. Hopefully tonights episode of winners and losers isn’t full or cross promotions. Last weeks episode which was one of the better ones this season, was ruined by multiple blatant cross promotions of better homes and gardens. Drama doesn’t need to be ruined by extremely overdone cross promotions.

  8. Yes MM I think you might be right about viewers tiring of reality shows – X Factor is down and Amazing Race is too (unfortunately). And then speaking of shows in the “pathetic” category, there is Bringing Sexy Back and there is (was, safe to say) the Brynne show. I think DWTS might suffer from a bit of viewer fatigue at the end of the year as well.

  9. Wonder if Big Brother will do well this year, normally the launch of a show does quite well and this to me was just average numbers and it was not that late compared to previous years, wonder if viewers are really getting tired of some of the reality shows most of them are pathetic but as they appeal to the young people I suppose they will keep showing them, there seems to be very little for the older generation.
