2014-09-25_0158Channel Nine has the Australian rights to a documentary Terror at the Mall, which looks at the 2013 Kenyan mall massacre.

The BBC-HBO doco tells the horrific story of a terrorist assault over four days that left 67 dead and hundreds wounded, and premieres in the US and UK this week.

Producers Amos Pictures secured previously unseen CCTV footage from the Nairobi Westgate shopping mall where the terrorist attack took place a year ago.

The documentary reopens questions over the slow and chaotic response by security forces to the attack that still haunt many in Nairobi – and over how four men armed only with automatic weapons could hold off the Kenyan military for nearly four days.

The mall itself, which dominates one of Nairobi’s busiest suburbs, remains closed, but there are plans to reopen it within the next year . Last week, for the first time, the sounds of construction echoed from the building that a year ago witnessed so much horror.

  1. Didn’t ABC’s Foreign Correspondent cover this a few months ago? “Martin Cuddihy has just returned to Kenya, after a temporary posting their (sic) last year which coincided with the siege at a Nairobi Shopping mall”.
But really Nine, why do we need this now? What are you thinking? Cashing in on recent/current events is just plain wrong.
@strayamayte – “we don’t need to be freaked out any more”. How right. It’s just faning the fire.

  2. The true horror is the thought of this airing on a commercial channel with incessant ad breaks, popups for ‘Big Brother’ and promos for ‘The Idiot Block’ jammed in everywhere-they simply have no respect for the material they broadcast nor the audience that watches it.

  3. I agree with Straya.

I was about to post the same thing.
There is enought Morbidity without dramatising a tragic terrorist event.

I am still appalled at current screenings of “Last days of….” and “Post Mortem” stories of the famous celebrities who have died.

I like entertainment and do not think the Terror at the Mall and deceased shows are necessary.

  4. I think we have enough terror in Australia without this. It doesn’t mention it in the story when this is airing, but at a time when people are concerned for their safety here, I don’t think it’s a good idea. The recent attack on police officers at Endeavour Hills occurred very closely and I can tell you this has effected many of us in the area who are very concerned for their safety now. The Mrs won’t catch the train now for fear of attack, because they could target anyone – no one is exempt from these people. So in saying that, we don’t need to be freaked out any more.
