TEN trims Bold and the Beautiful

2014-09-19_0039Those long, lingering looks on The Bold and The Beautiful are not always so long on TEN with the network trimming drama scenes to reduce the show’s running time.

Including credits, TEN has trimmed up to 1:22 minutes from US episodes when screening the show at 4:30pm weekdays.

While it’s not unusual for networks to make cuts to fit into a G classification, one eagle-eyed fan says the show has been losing some of its trademark lingering looks, in order to fit in more ads and promos.

“The start and end point of scenes are trimmed right back,” they said. “Exterior location footage is trimmed (particularly annoying when the show is on location); long lingering stares; and the opening and closing credits.”

Loss of credits is not unusual on TEN nor, indeed, other shows on other networks. But complaints about trimming the drama within scenes is an unusual practice.

A TEN spokesperson told TV Tonight, “The only regular editing that Network TEN does to The Bold and the Beautiful is the removal of the end credits. This is common practice and is implemented on the majority of our programs to ensure the program finishes on time.

“There have been only a few episodes where a segment has been edited but the dialogue has never been altered.”

Trimming content for running time, rather than classification, also comes at a time when Free to Air networks have been pushing for increased advertising time -however TEN does not back a push by Seven and Nine on this front.

TEN also maintained that nobody had complained about the editing, but the fan wrote a letter to Programming Chief Beverly McGarvey whose office acknowledged credits and classification cuts in a reply letter.

“We do appreciate you taking the time to write to us,” she wrote. “Letters such as yours provide valuable feedback for the network on a whole, and especially for the Programming Department, as we are always updating and changing our Programming.”

  1. Ten has been doing the same to The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson for quite some time. Most notably, the 9/11 monologue in 2013 was deleted entirely! There was nothing offensive in the monologue. Indeed it was quite respectful. Certainly didn’t breach any Australian classification standards. It’s only home shopping style shows afterwards, so there is no need to chop content to ensure the next show starts on time.

  2. I have only recently been informed Chanel 10 edits The Bold & The Beautiful. Having viewed 2 deleted scenes I am disappointed with Chanel Ten’s actions. I put my weight behind the petition to stop these practices.

  4. Problem is it rates its socks off at 430pm so no chance of it being moved as it is a good lead in to the news. The cuts are horrendous though and often make scenes incomprehensible. I remember once the cuts were so significant that they played 2 episodes in the single 1/2 hour slot! It deserves a repeat viewing in full at a time when cuts don’t need to be made.

There have been quite a few cuts due to violence in the past couple of months ( Ally confronting Taylor with a medievel axe, Quinn stabbing Liam with his sword necklace, then the climactic scene where Quinn attacks Liam with her home made sword before her son Wyatt stops her. It is a real shame to viewers that we are missing these scenes as the dramatic impact is somewhat lessened. Thet really should think about changing timeslots or showing an uncut version.

  6. Have watched Bold for years yes channel ten cut scenes because it is on at children’s time slot
    why not put it on early afternoon and not cut anything
    that would be great what do you people think

  7. They definitely edit out scenes of violence or those considered a little risque for a 4.30pm timeslot….but just minutes later discuss murder, rape, violence etc on the news, and sometimes show scenes with a warning of being distressing to viewers.

  8. @Pertinax. You’d be stunned at what they are cutting – it’s not just the credits, nor are the cuts classification. I’ve done a side by side comparison. Episodes are around 2½ minutes longer for International Distribution – they contain a bonus “filler” scene which the US do not get.

  9. Ten is unlikely to bother editing the show. Probably just starting the ad breaks a bit early. Which they used to do a lot in many shows and did miss dialogue which was very annoying.

    The glares and cut shots only exist to cheaply pad the show out to the required length anyway.

    There’s also the possibility that some episode aired in the US 30s or 1m longer in the US and were edited down for international distribution.

    In the old days we sometimes would get 24 f/s versions of the 30 f/s original NTSC. When that is run at 25 f/s on PAL it ran 4% shorter. Though these days with digital they can do all sort of conversions so that probably doesn’t happen anymore.

    – nice try TEN. You’ve been removing the opening credits (featuring the cast) too.

    – a few? It’s been every episode since 23 February 2012. That’s approximately 660 episodes.

    I actually miss B&B’s closing credits – the awesome scenery from all around the world makes you want to watch them. There are even YouTube channels dedicated to B&B’s credits.

    Get your act together TEN, and while you’re at it, put the uncut episodes on Tenplay.

  11. So one person complained? Clearly hundreds of thousands of other people don’t care. Considering it airs just before the news, I’m not surprised they crop it to finish on time.

    What rubbish. You have a fixed time of 17:00:00 every day to hit. The afternoon’s program timing is backtimed from there. You cut B&B credits, like all other credits, to minimise the time between programs that the viewer has to change channels. B&B frequently starts at 4:27-4:28. How about ensuring a program starts on time, like in the old days.

    But talking about caring….I think it is an embarrassment that an Australian network chooses to show an American soapie at 4.30pm on a weeknight. Stick it at early arvo. What happened to a commitment children’s TV. It is a disgrace and has been for two decades.
