6whitFollowing the death today of Gough Whitlam today, ABC TV will screen the excellent two-part documentary Whitlam: The Power and the Passion tonight at 8:30pm.

The former PM died this morning, aged 98.

Written and directed by Paul Clarke, it coincidentally follows the Kitchen Cabinet episode featuring Bob Hawke, who was the next Labor PM after Whitlam’s famed reign.

The documentary examines the Whitlam era. It was a time of power, and of passion, which divided us as a nation in a way that hadn’t been seen before – nor since.

As a great orator, with a brilliant mind and bulletproof self belief, Gough Whitlam spent more than over 20 years fighting civil wars inside the Labor party before eventually leading them to power. He was hailed as a Labor messiah – with a greater downfall than any politician in Australian history.

Narrated by Judy Davis, it features interviews with people who worked with, knew, or were touched by this iconic Prime Minister; the most enlightening archival footage that could be found; and dramatic reconstructions to add insight and entertainment.

Flying Miners will now continue next week, and At The Movies will screen tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 9.30PM.

  1. One of the best doco’s the ABC ever made. Up there with the classic Labor In Power. They even interviewed a former classmate of mine who held a demonstration outside Old Parliament House the day Gough was dismissed.
