AFTRS: Summer School

If you need to brush up on Camera, Sound, Lighting, Presenting, Editing or Writing, here's an idea for your summer break.

2014-10-30_0107AFTRS Open is running a series of five-day introductory workshops in Sydney throughout January as part of its Summer School for TV, film and radio.

This could be a smart way to utilise your summer if you’re looking to work in the TV industry, or already have a foot in the door but need new skills.

TV Summer School tutors are professionals currently working in the industry. Jimmy Foggo, who’s most recent credit is River Cottage, will be teaching TV Camera, Sound & Lighting Skills for upcoming Shooter/Producers.

“I remember starting out in TV and having so many questions,” says Jimmy. ”I didn’t know where to start or even who to ask. I hope that using my personal experience I can share my knowledge plus influence and shape more talented and conscientious producers of television in Australia. I also love how teaching has improved my own knowledge and ability, forcing me to question why I do things the way I do and how I can do them better.”

Jutta Goetze who has worked as a writer in the industry over 20 years and is currently script editing The Kettering Incident (Porchlight Films and Sweet Potato Films, to be shown on Foxtel in 2015) will be teaching Writing for TV Intensive.

“Because I’ve worked in television for more years than I will admit to (think ‘Skyways’ and ‘Cop Shop’), I teach from both a creative and a formatted perspective. And from experience,” says Jutta. “I think that students will walk away from the Writing for TV Intensive course with a better understanding of the television industry, in the way scripts are written, and I hope they will have learned a certain amount of tools to continue working on their own ideas. I do not have any magic formulas. I place a huge emphasis on hard work and preparation. It’s a great course to introduce a student to the craft, and to give them an idea of whether they want to study further. I think it will also give them a greater insight into their own scripts and perhaps the roles they may want to pursue – whether it’s as writer, script editor or story producer.”
