Airdate: Gotham

Nine to launch Gotham with a double episode out of The Block's auction night.

2014-10-02_1156Nine has confirmed the launch of new US series Gotham as 8:30pm Sunday October 12th.

Launching with a double episode, it will premiere following The Block auction, which should ensure a bumper audience. 60 Minutes and Big Brother appear to be out for the night (to be confirmed).

Gotham is a Batman-prequel written and produced by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) and centres around a young (Commissioner) James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) partnered with detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue).

It has attracted positive reviews and ratings in the US.

Gotham, the gripping new drama series about the city that spawned the world’s most notorious super villains, premieres with a movie length episode on Sunday, October 12 at 8.30pm on Channel Nine.

Adding a new chapter to the history of the original city of sin, Gotham is the origin story of Batman as well as the evil doers that he rose to fight against.

The series charts the early days of many of the characters who will go on to become some of DC Comics’ most renowned, enduring villains. They include a teenaged Selina Kyle, the future Catwoman (Camren Bicondova); a young Edward Nygma, the future Riddler (Cory Michael Smith); and Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor).

Before the Caped Crusader emerged as the hero we know him to be today, one of his greatest allies was already fighting the criminals and corruption that riddled the city – James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), a man synonymous with law and order and one of the crime world’s greatest foes.

Partnered with the brash but shrewd police legend Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), Gordon is called to their first case, the most high-profile crime committed in Gotham City – the murder of billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne.

At the gruesome murder scene they meet the sole survivor, the couple’s hauntingly intense, 12-year-old son Bruce (David Mazouz), with whom Gordon feels a strong kinship. Moved by the boy’s terrible loss, the young detective vows to find out who killed his parents.

As he navigates the often underhanded politics of Gotham’s criminal justice system, Gordon encounters imposing gang boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and the many colourful and dangerous characters that call Gotham home.

  1. Enough of the promos Ch9. Every break has a promo for this show. I’m ssssoooo over it! Surely Ch9 are not that desperate to secure viewers for this show. Unless of course this show won’t live up to its reputation.

  2. I think I will watch it via other means. This show premiered a couple of weeks ago. Why couldn’t they have fastracked it. Wonder why people get it through other means.

  3. Another double episode to kick off a new show? Like others here I really can’t be bothered with the hassle of that, especially when we know that it’ll start late and probably get shunted around in subsequent weeks.
    I’ll watch it by other means… 😉

  4. I agree with everyone’s cynicism here.

It’s highly doubtful that Gotham will start anywhere near 8.30pm, and no doubt it will be rife with ads, pop ups, logos, crawlers and constant in-the-corner on-screen advertising for other shows, all intrusive rubbish that will ruin the show’s continuity.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing Gotham, but I might have to wait for the release of the DVD set.

  5. May appear sometime between 830pm and 10pm due to reality running overtime as the lead in, pretty cynical attempt to boost ratings for the block. It will then be jerked around the schedule at random times with episodes played out of order by Nine until it vanishes forever.

Not even sure if its worth PVRing given Commercial FTA TVs track record of how they treat US content.

If its any good it may become part of my digital collection or a box DVD set if season 2 is given the go ahead.

  6. “…following The Block auction… ” Agree with the others, it will start well after 9pm. This is so annoying! Looking forward to it otherwise.

  7. I was recently in the States and caught both episodes.

I really liked them both. I don’t agree that the second was weak at all. But damn it ended with me really wishing I had the third ready to go.

Which will be a problem with the couple weeks delay in broadcast and the episodes ending like that. People will be impatient and pirate.

  8. It is a mistake launching this with a double episode. The pilot is great but the second episode is weak.

Also it won’t start til 9pm due to Nein’s The Block overrun, and 60 minutes if it is also on the schedule.

  9. By 8.30, Nine actually mean about 9.12 or later right? As if this will actually start at a time anywhere near 8.30. Might have to set the PVR for three hours for this one.
