Bachelor fallout upstages “fairytale” ending

Updated: TEN confirms rumours that Blake & Sam are no more, just a day after the show said otherwise.

bgarvIt was a “fairytale” ending but today TEN’s Bachelor is in a world of pain and social media buzz that money just can’t buy.

Tweet volume for the show is up 189% on last year’s finale.

But if the rumours are true about a split between Blake Garvey and Samantha Frost they threaten to undermine the premise of the show: that you can find true love by putting yourself through the hoops of Reality television.

Last year’s winner Tim Robards and Anna Heinrich have continued a relationship long after the credits rolled, but on ‘day one’ of their post-show life, Blake and Sam have been pulled from all interviews by Network TEN. Not the kind of behaviour we would view as typical following a Reality show finale, especially one that has actually scored for an under-performing network.

Of course the series finished filming weeks ago.

On Instagram, runner-up Lisa Hyde has denied she is involved with split rumours.

“Wow what an incredible journey that was! Thank you everyone for all your love and support. I can confirm the rumor and I am definitely not pregnant with Blakes baby… Lol I wish Sam and Blake all the best in the next chapter of their lives,” she said.

There are also suggestions on radio that Sam has been “devastated” by watching her guy whisper sweet nothings to the other ladies on the show, which is clearly the format of the show.

None of these have been confirmed by TEN, which could resolve the situation by letting its participants be interviewed in what is standard media practice.

Or just bring everybody back for a Reunion next week and reveal all.

Updated: A statement from TEN:

Statement from a Network Ten spokesperson:

“Network Ten can confirm that Blake and Sam have sadly ended their engagement. When Blake proposed to Sam in South Africa, he did so because he had genuinely fallen in love with her. He was excited to start a life with Sam and was very much looking forward to their future together.

Unfortunately, not all relationships are meant to be, and feelings invariably change. Once Blake returned to his everyday life, he realised that they both wanted different things from a relationship and had different priorities. Blake has the greatest love and respect for Sam, but has made the difficult decision to end the relationship.”

But wait there’s more…

Woman’s Day claims to have secured the only interview with Garvey.

  1. The whole ‘damage the brand’ thing is load of bollocks. The free publicity that Ten has gained is immeasurable. The second series was a runaway success because it was obvious very early that Blake was a tosser. All of the social media talk was about the wonderful lack of ‘reality’ on the show and the hilarious interactions between the girls. The best scene were the ones Bland wasn’t in! Anyone thinking the show is seriously about finding love needs their head read. Sam should be rubbing her hands together – she dodged a bullet, has a $58k ring on her finger and made a new bestie in Lisa. She came out a winner.

  2. Channel Ten ‏@channelten 1h1 hour ago
Monday on @theprojecttv, @BickmoreCarrie sits down with #TheBachelorAU’s Blake & Sam to reveal what really happened. Not to be missed…

  3. I would have thought the distance thing should have come up sooner, Perth vs Melbourne Home is home and too far away from family. But saying that I did enjoy the series and I really do not like reality TV much but sometimes you get hooked.

  4. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them splitting after the show ended, nor is it damaging to the brand. But Ten should have done a reunion show and have them explain what happened, instead of leaving invested viewers speculating. That damages the brand.

  5. Has he returned to his girlfriend? The one he had but “separated” from so he could be on the show? I guess Woman’s Day/ACA/Sunday will tell eventually.
But does she get to keep the ring?!

  6. Perhaps there is some reality in the show after all. Sometimes when people fall in love in a high pressure situation it leads to a stable long term relationship but sometimes its a mess.

  7. I thought he’d go for Laurina, actually, he really appeared to dig her the most of all the women so I was surprised when he eliminated her. Nightmare scenario for Ten, to have such an anti-climactic end to a relatively successful season. I also heard on radio this morning that Sam had been very upset as the show unfolded, watching Blake getting up close and personal with the other women. What did she expect, though? That is the format of the show.

  8. and in other unrelated news, bookmakers have stopped taking bets on this years “Tosser of the Year” award… (I am guessing you would have probably censored the word that rhymes with banker)

  9. I’ve never seen the show before, but perhaps next year they don’t film it so far in advance and they do an ‘almost live’ finale if not live.
