Of all the TV shows to remake as a movie, this has to be one of the most unlikely candidates...

2014-10-27_1420First pictures have been released of the upcoming feature film of Dad’s Army. And no, I have no idea why this is getting a big screen remake, either.

Shooting on the UK movie begins this month on location in Yorkshire.

Bill Nighy plays Wilson, with Zeta-Jones as glamorous journalist Rose and Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring.

The Inbetweeners actor Blake Harrison plays Pike, with Michael Gambon as Godfrey, Danny Mays as Walker, Tom Courtenay as Corporal Jones and Bill Paterson as Fraser.

Dad’s Army, created by Jimmy Perry and the late David Croft, originally aired between 1968 and 1977.

The film is written by Hamish McColl (Mr. Bean’s Holiday, Johnny English Reborn) and set to be released in 2015.

  1. It is one of my favourite British comedies of all time, but I can’t see how this will really work.

    The series always presented a nostalgic view of history, with the underlying truth that Mainwaring and his crew would have been annihilated by Nazi invaders – that’s where the pathos of the series came from. Secondly, there was the (not so) subtle commentary on the British class system.

    It worked because in the late 60s/early 70s the war was in living memory and an audience at the time were either seeing themselves or their fathers being represented. More than four decades have passed and much of what made the original series so rich and effective is now a tad anachronistic.

    Great cast though.

  2. The original show was about a nostalgic view of history so this is a logical extension-perhaps Micalef’s recent reimagined opening credits for the Crimean/Ukrainian crisis shows just how deeply imbedded DA still is in popular culture (for an older audience at least).

  4. @Tony Actually Ian Lavender is still alive along with Frank Williams and Pamela Cundell who played The Vicar and Mrs Fox (who ended up marrying Corporal Jones in the last episode) respectively.

    The only casting that has me not convinced is Bill Paterson as Frazer, John Laurie was lanky, wind swept and interesting (to borrow a Billy Connolly phrase) someone like Peter Capaldi or Connolly would have been better.

    Though, in general, I have to agree witk Kirk – why?

    BTW, there was also a 1971 movie with the original cast.

  7. OMG! Never be more than a pale imitation of what was a brilliant original.

    Is ‘Allo! ‘Allo! next?
