NWS9 Adelaide to exit North Adelaide home

After 55 years NWS9 Adelaide will exit its Tynte Street site and relocate to Pirie Street.

2014-10-10_1012After 55 years NWS9 Adelaide will exit its Tynte Street station in North Adelaide and relocate to 169 Pirie Street.

Nine has acquired naming rights to the former Adelaide Bank Building at Pirie Street, and will take over floor space previously held by Bendigo Bank.

Refurbishment work has already commenced with an Adelaide first: a glass-fronted studio on the ground floor that will allow viewers to engage with Nine News from the street.

Channel Nine Adelaide began broadcasting from 202 Tynte Street on September 5, 1959. At the time the cost of the land, the studio build, equipment, tower and building at Mount Lofty was approximately 300,000 pounds. Over the decades the Tynte Street site has been home to local shows including Nine News, The Curiosity Show, The Country and Western Hour, Channel Niners, Here’s Humphrey, and Pick Your Face.

David Gyngell, CEO of Nine Entertainment Company, said: “Since we acquired Nine in Adelaide last year Sean O’Brien and the team have worked tirelessly to build the business and connect with the community.

“This move to the heart of the city, to become an integral part of the fabric of Adelaide, will reinforce that commitment.

“Congratulations to Sean and the team who have secured this new site for us.”

Sean O’Brien, Managing Director of Channel Nine Adelaide, said: “We have undergone significant change over the past twelve months.

“Our business has grown and now is the time to undertake the biggest change in our history since we started broadcasting in 1959.

“We leave the bricks and mortar behind but take our memories to a building we have designed to support a business that is no longer just about television, but encompasses digital, events, social media and a resurgence in community involvement.

“All going to plan, we will be fully operational in Pirie Street in the third quarter of 2015.”

Knight Frank has been appointed sales agent of the 6,774sqm site at Tynte Street site, expected to be used for residential development.

  1. I remember going to Ch9 North Adelaide when I was a contestant on a game show called ‘Guess What?’ when I was 10 years old (20+ years ago)! Ozzie Ostrich was special guest!

  2. Still waiting on announcements for TCN and STW to move. QTQ can’t move unless they surrender the land back to the City Council for which there will no monetary return for Nine. Same for BTQ7 and TVQ10 on Mt Coot-tha, all built on Council Forest land in the 1950s/60s leased on the proviso that they revert back as cleared forest land if they leave.

  3. The Tynte Street Studio does hold a lot of South Australian television history, but like Seven and TEN, they all have to move on. ABC are the only ones in their original location now.
    The new location will be right around the corner from the TEN studios on Wakefield Street, and across the square from the NovaFM studios.
    The view from the glass-fronted studio should capture the tree lined frontage and Hindmarsh Square which the building sits within.
