Paul McDermott to host new SBS interview series

Paul McDermott will chat to celebrities in the local version of Room 101 in 2015.

2014-10-19_0018Paul McDermott will front a new interview series for SBS, Room 101, based on a UK format.

The 10 part series, produced by Matchbox Pictures (The Slap, Devil’s Playground, The Real Housewives of Melbourne), sees celebrities discussing what really gets under their skin, with their pet hates sent to Room 101, named after the place in George Orwell’s landmark novel 1984.

The UK version has been airing since 1994, with 13 series to date.

SBS Director of Television Tony Iffland said; “We have wanted to launch a new entertainment series on SBS ONE for some time and Room 101 is the perfect mix of comedy, topicality and irreverence to kick start our new year of programing. We know this format is a success, it is an established hit in the UK, and we are excited to introduce Australian audiences to the series with Paul McDermott at the helm. I look forward to seeing Paul’s sharp wit and creativity at work, as he uncovers just what winds up the country’s biggest personalities.”

Kylie Washington, Director Unscripted Television at Matchbox Pictures said; “Room 101 has been a comedy stalwart in the UK for 20 years and Matchbox is thrilled to be bringing it to Australia. Paul McDermott is one of the country’s best loved and revered comedians – the perfect choice to decide if the nation’s celebrities will have their pet hates banished to the hellish vault of room 101.”

The series will be filmed at the SBS studios in Sydney for airing in 2015.

  1. Watched only ten minutes and could not believe SBS bothered- -we thought we were in the school yard with 9 year olds -it is utter rubbish, a desperate attempt at exposure for the guests. Paul could do better ! The guests are in the arts, they know how to act, how credible are their responses? Hope it never comes back.

  2. Will this be one on one with a weekly guest (as the original format was) or more of a panel show with three guests competing to put items in Room 101 as the latest version is.
