Ryan Murphy to helm American Crime Story

Ryan Murphy will bring the O.J. Simpson trial to screen, describing it as "the beginning of the modern tabloid."

2014-10-08_1043It’s not just horror on Ryan Murphy’s mind with news that he will resume anthology storytelling for a true-life drama, American Crime Story.

The first story the show will tackle is the O.J. Simpson case.

Season 1, which will be 10 episodes, is titled “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and will be based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book, “The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson.” It will tell the story from the lawyers’ perspective while also recounting the LAPD’s history with the African-American community. Originally in development at FOX, the series has since moved to FX.

Ryan Murphy said, “The O.J. case was as tragic as it was fascinating – it seemed like everyone had a stake in the outcome.

“It was really the beginning of the modern tabloid.”

Murphy, who will co-executive produce with writing partner Brad Falchuk, will direct the first episode of the new series, to begin filming early next year.

FX CEO, John Landgraf, said in a statement that he hopes the show will “become a series of great true crime-based miniseries.” With True Detective, FX’s Fargo and the recent return of Twin Peaks, it seems like the dark crime dramas are bound to take over television.”

Meanwhile American Horror Story returns to ELEVEN next Monday.
