Twin Peaks return confirmed for 2016

David Lynch is returning to his cult series 25 years after it last aired, for nine episodes.

laura-palmerA return of 1990s cult drama Twin Peaks has been confirmed by Showtime.

David Lynch and Mark Frost will revisit the series two and a half decades after it last aired, bringing to life the words of Laura Palmer who told Agent Dale Cooper she would see him again in 25 years.

However the series is not being billed as a reboot or a remake, but a continuation of where the story left off in June 1991.

Lynch and Frost will pen a limited run of nine episodes, with Lynch directing. While it is unclear whether any original cast members would appear, Kyle MacLachlan has tweeted:

“What more can I say — Twin Peaks with David Lynch and Mark Frost on Showtime in 2016!” said David Nevins, president of Showtime Networks. “To quote Agent Cooper, ‘I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.'”

Lynch and Frost added in a joint statement: “The mysterious and special world of Twin Peaks is pulling us back. We’re very excited. May the forest be with you.”

Lynch and Frost both teased the show’s possible return on Twitter, telling followers: ” That gum you like is going to come back in style! #damngoodcoffee”

Frost has also spoken to Hollywood Reporter in a Q&A with more detail.

  1. If it’d be for Netflix (who tried their own TP knockoff Hemlock Grove), or for any basic cable, or premium US cable network, I’d say yes. I’d prefer Netflix. For any free to air US TV network, it won’t work.

Given that a few actors from the original show have died, an update would be useful.

  2. Was wondering if Pertinax would comment on this, he/she seemed quite convinced that the twitter post etc was not going to lead to a resurrection of this series.

I haven’t seen any of this show but heard interesting things about it, apparently it influenced to a degree Fargo and True Detective, two excellent shows

  3. Thankfully someone occasionally both wants to make good television and has the ability to do so, instead of the tsunami of mindless reality drivel and banal or half-arsed dramas that clog the commercial networks.

  4. @aesthetic. So if I loved Fargo as much as I did, then I should watch Twin Peaks too?

I have a feeling that Emmy’s are just going to be thrown at this 🙂
