ACMI forum on Scandi-dramas

The Killing, Borgen, The Bridge, The Tunnel and remakes will be discussed next week in a forum at ACMI.

2013-07-21_0010If you’re a fan of Scandi-dramas, The Australian Centre for the Moving Image will be discussing Nordic TV and their English-language remakes in Remaking Nordic Television, a Talking TV live event next week.

With the popularity of Scandinavian television steadily rising over the past few years, it is clear Nordic countries are offering up some of the most original, challenging and engaging shows on air. Global audiences are tuning in en masse and English-language remakes of European programs are popping up on television networks everywhere from the UK to the USA.

In this edition of Talking TV we explore how the interest in Scandinavian programming has given exposure to other European content, and why Western television networks are scrambling to develop English-language remakes of these huge European hits.

A panel will investigate the new golden age of Scandinavian television and take a look at some of the most popular series to come out of the Nordic region of late. With a focus on the Danish/Swedish series Broen and remakes The Tunnel (France/UK) and The Bridge (USA/Mexico), as well as other popular European programs and their remakes (such as Forbrydelsen/The Killing and Les Revenants/The Returned), our speakers will examine the popular fascination with TV from the continent and discuss whether the English-language remakes stand up to the originals.

  1. It’s not rocket science. The Scandinavians have been making TV with interesting characters and plots (even if they are over the top at times) that work together and where every episode is of high quality giving a broad appeal to a public broadcaster audience. It’s what the BBC used to do, before it became about a pandering to regional interests and political correctness. And what the USA channel, ITV etc. do.

They also owe a fair debt to US TV. The Shield heavily inspired Braquo especially.

The fact that all the commercial remakes have flopped indicates they don’t stand up and the idea won’t work everywhere. Broadchurch is the only English language success in that style.

The Returned is based on a French film using an idea that first appeared in a Japanese novel. The US version (from a US novel with a similar idea) is flopping in S2. It’s a different style of mystic…
