Graeme Goodings quits Seven News Adelaide

Update: Told he would be replaced, Graeme Goodings quits after 34 years but Seven denies he was "sacked."

2014-11-24_2356Veteran news presenter Graeme Goodings is departing Channel Seven after 34 years with the network, because he was being replaced as weekend presenter and his contract not renewed.

Goodings, who has been the weekend news presenter with Seven, was denied the chance to farewell viewers but was offered the opportunity to continue in a reduced capacity, which he declined.

Goodings started his career as a panel operator at 3AW in Melbourne and soon after he commenced his first full time radio announcing position in Launceston, Tasmania in 1969.

But he then made the move to Adelaide where he joined 5DN and worked as a newsreader for five years. There were also roles at TNT Channel 9 in Launceston as a copy writer and commercial producer, before as a journalist and reader.

In 1980 Graeme he joined Seven in Adelaide as a senior reporter and two years later he became sports editor and presenter. In 1983 he was appointed weekday newsreader.

After overcoming serious illness in 2004 he moved from presenting weekdays to weekends, which he commenced in 2005.

Seven Adelaide General Manager Tony Davison said: “Graeme has been a highly respected member of the Seven News team for over 30 years and on behalf of everyone at Seven we thank him for his contribution to the success of Seven Adelaide.”

A replacement for weekend bulletins will be announced in the coming week.

UPDATE: Seven statement:

Seven News weekend presenter Graeme Goodings was offered the opportunity to continue with Seven in 2015.

Graeme was not sacked, he was offered a one year contract in a reduced capacity and he declined the offer. It was entirely Graeme’s decision to leave Channel Seven.

Seven wishes Graeme all the best in his future endeavours.

  1. Very very bad behaviour Seven Adelaide and Tony Davison the manager is just a puppet to the eastern states, not very strong at his job. I know, I worked there.

  2. boy_wonder you’re spot on. The entire 7 network is known for this sort of shabby behavior. People in Melbourne can remember when HSV-7 sacked Mal Walden and their ratings dived to simply a *

  3. I don’t know him….but really Seven….no one with a shred of dignity would accept those terms…and it doesn’t matter how you paint it up…
There is no respect for loyalty/experience in any business these days….it is all about appearances/youth and the almighty dollar.

  4. Wow what a bizzare move, yes you want to show new talent but its not the correct way to do it. I’m sure Adelaide viewers would be most disappointment.

  5. I’ve never been a huge fan of the guy, so I’m not going to miss him at all, but if those rumors are true, he didn’t deserve to be treated like that.

  6. Seven are good for this behaviour. They demoted Kay McGrath in Brisbane after 20(?)years and her and Rod were No.1. Now btq7 trails qtq9. 7news needs Adelaide and Perth for the national win, they deserve everything they get. It says a lot if they can’t respect someone who has worked there for 34years. Jump ship I say!

  7. Noooooo! Graeme is a legend! (I don’t live there anymore but I do catch up with SA news on the 7News app’s video clip service) and he is quite simply one of the best news readers I have seen in this country. I used to enjoy the weeknight bulletins with Graeme and Jane before he got ill and went solo on the weekends, but the weekend bulletins were met with such experience and professionalism. This makes me sad. 🙁 makes me wonder now how/if 7s Adelaide news ratings will be effected on the weekend bulletin. Unless Mike Smithson steps up – he is very experienced and viewers will take to him on the desk.

Good on ya Graeme! Surely missed.

  8. Not too sure about Graeme Goodings resigning. The front page on The Advertiser in Adelaide reports that he was sacked yesterday (Monday) without any warning….. blindsided if u like.
He will be missed and now another Channel Seven program we will not be watching.
I would be worried, very worried, if I were John Riddell, Jane Doyle or even Rosanna Mangiarelli for any one of them could be next.
Anyway, as for Graeme resigning…. I really dont think so.
I wish him all the best as he was truly a great newsreader and will be sadly missed in our household.

  9. Don’t live in Adelaide so never heard of him but you’d wonder why they’d sack such an experienced newsreader and even more so why they wouldn’t just let him read until the end of the year when his contract is up. It is after all, less than a couple of months. Obviously they don’t have much respect for such a long term employee.
