Prince Charles recreates Molly’s Countdown interview

Video: "Nobody prepared me for Molly Meldrum," recalls HRH The Prince of Wales.

“There is an old showbiz saying which warns never to work with animals or children,” says HRH The Prince of Wales.

“But nobody prepared me for Molly Meldrum.”

Prince Charles shows his funny side with this cheeky tribute to Molly and Countdown ahead of its 40th birthday. The moment is now part of Australian television history.

This scene will air in the upcoming ABC special.

“We’re absolutely thrilled His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has taken time out from his Royal duties to help us celebrate Countdown’s birthday with us. His sketch highlights HRH’s keen sense of humour and the obvious affection he has for Molly and Countdown,” says ABC Director of Television, Richard Finlayson.

In hindsight, the original footage was very special and often funny. We hope this clip becomes as treasured as the original.”

  1. andy pandy – Prince Charles wasn’t sitting with Molly when he swore. He’d been taken elsewhere to give Molly a chance to get it right.

Molly dithered at the best of time, so it’s not the least bit surprising that he was a nervous wreck when interviewing royalty.

As for Prince Charles, huge kudos to him for being such a good sport (both then and now). Isn’t this the interview where he mildly chastises Molly for referring to “your mum” (“You mean, Her Majesty, the Queen”)?

  2. Poor Molly – he was just overwhelmed!
And who knew Prince Charles has such a great sense of humour?
P.S. I remember watching it live…. it was so embarrassing!

  3. That was very funny, good on Prince Charles for being a gentleman, then , and now.
Even 40 years ago, Molly should have known better than to be so disrepectful to Price Charles, he should have been professional enough to handle one interview on his own show, and the swearing was a definite no no.

  4. OMG…..Respect to the man….he just continues to gain mine ….the more he ages….and the more I have taken time to learn about the many things he has done and continues to do.
