AMC network has ordered 14 more episodes, to be split into two halves, in 2015 and 2016, just as it has done for Mad Men and Breaking Bad.

“With season five of Hell On Wheels, we are proud to bring our trans-continental journey to conclusion for the large, loyal audience that has traveled with Cullen Bohannon and his crew for so many years,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. “We look forward to appropriately honoring Hell On Wheels in this final season.”

It airs in Australia on FX.

  1. 5 seasons is a fairly typical run for a premium series. After that guild contract have to be renegotiated which is expensive, they have already had to give Mount a producer’s credit.

The railway has to be finished at some point. It only took Union Pacific 4 years to build the railway from Council Bluffs to Promontory Summit, while the show will run for 6 years.

  2. Don’t know why it would be for a final season, this show is great and it’s ratings have stayed steady over the years. I guess the walking dead is costing AMC too much money to keep actual good shows going.

  3. These split seasons to drag things out and try to slow the decline in cable subscriptions viewer numbers are becoming annoying.

People complain about US shows not being fast-tracked but what about US networks locking the second half of final seasons up in their vaults for 12 months?
