Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has signed a multi-year licensing agreement for film and television shows with Nine / Fairfax-owned StreamCo service, Stan.

It follows the SVOD service announcing Better Call Saul as its first exclusive title.

Mike Sneesby, Chief Executive Officer of StreamCo, said: “Fargo has proved to be one of 2014’s best new series and adds to the lineup of high-quality dramas Stan will have at launch. MGM’s library includes some of the greatest movies ever made, and we’re delighted to be able to bring a range of them to Stan for our audience to enjoy.”

Chris Ottinger, President, International Television Distribution and Acquisitions, MGM, said: “MGM is thrilled to offer Stan’s audience access to a wide variety of premium entertaining content, including new and classic titles from our catalogue, as well as Fargo, our breakout Emmy-winning miniseries featuring world-class talent.”

The launch will also see The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, RoboCop, 21 Jump Street and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher.

TV titles will include Teen Wolf, The L Word and Will and Grace.

Expected to launch by February, no prices have been announced for Stan.

Fargo is currently in repeat on SBS ONE.

  1. @tomothyd – It is the same in the US, just that Netflix and Hulu are more talked about, the channels all have there own (CBS have all access which they charge for). Then there’s Yahoo Screen, Amazon Prime Instant Video, Sony Unlimited Video, Crackle, Cinema Now and a host of others (each cable supplier has there own).

Some when you go to watch on Hulu, direct you to the site of the show like Bates Motel takes you to A&E when it is airing. South Park used to redirect to the South Park Studios site, not sure if it still does as I watch new eps of that on SBS2 now as it’s only delayed by 3 days and is not bleeped on the swearing.

  2. @Secret Squirrel – “most of the population”. Can’t speak for the rest, but in the Illawarra region of NSW

But when one finally gets a line, copper, fibre or otherwise, Telstra can’t provide ‘ports’ at the exchange.
This problem covers the entire Illawarra region, not just the one suburb of Tullimbar – and many other parts of the country outside metro areas.

  3. Nine’s been playing a lot of MGM/UA movies lately, like GEM last night, and all of the Bond titles (in umpteenth rerun). Local library has Fargo on DVD, and its on Quickflix streaming or DVD.
@tomothyd – But first we need a fast unlimited Internet connection, and so far, most of the country doesn’t have and can’t get that.

  4. Exclusive streaming rights? I thought Foxtel already had an agreement with MGM? Does this mean MGM titles will now only be seen on Foxtel Movies linear channels?

  5. Quickflix, Netflix, Stan, Bigpond Movies & catchup sites/apps. What a mess. Just roll out Netflix and Hulu and be done with it. But make them available on all smart tvs, not just selected 2013 models onwards!
