Viewers in early summer season

Ratings: As TV ratings go, viewers continue to tell networks they are already in summer mode.

2014-11-16_2336TV’s “early summer” of ratings continues, as audiences continue to shun many of the offerings put before them.

It’s hard to think of another year in which a summer-style switch-off has begun so early. It is in part due to the failure of two Reality shows: Big Brother and The Big Adventure, together with little compelling local content on TEN.

But before dismissing Seven’s reality show outright it is worth acknowledging the importance of risk-taking. Without these, we would be subjected to more of the same. No hits were ever forged without someone taking a risk somewhere along the way.

Last week was a win for Nine, with cricket coverage helping it to defeat Seven.

Network:
Nine: 30.5
Seven: 27.6
ABC: 18.6
TEN: 18.3
SBS: 5.0

The Big Bang Theory (1.3m) was the week’s top show then Nine News (Sunday: 1.174m) and Twenty/20 Cricket (Aus v Sth Africa Game 3: 1.1m).

Seven had just one title above one million viewers, Sunday Night (1.03m). Seven News (Sun: 978,000) and Surveillance Oz (931,000) followed.

Australian Story (963,000), Four Corners  and ABC News (Sun) were both 812,000.

NCIS (661,000) was best for TEN then Madam Secretary (576,00) and NCIS: LA (570,000).

On SBS ONE it was Secrets of Britain (329,000), Treasures of Ancient Rome (292,000) and What’s the Catch? with Matthew Evans (288,000).

Primary channel:
Nine: 21.0
Seven: 18.2
ABC: 13.3
TEN: 12.5
SBS ONE: 3.9

Multichannels:
7TWO: 5.6
GO!: 5.5
GEM: 4.0
7mate: 3.8
ELEVEN: 3.3
ABC2: 3.1
ONE: 2.6
ABC News 24: 1.4
ABC3: 0.9
SBS 2: 0.9
NITV: 0.2

It was no contest in the demos, with Nine easily winning 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Nine won Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Seven won Tuesday and Wednesday. ABC bettered Ten on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Seven won Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide -the latter by just 0.5%. Nine took out Sydney and Melbourne.

Only two more weeks remain before the official summer season begins.

  1. I fully agree with your statement about risk taking David. However, theres risk taking like perhaps the first ever season of Big Brother, then theres plain stupidity, like the Big Adventure, which has just made most of the same mistakes they made with the Mole revamp & later seasons of the Amazing Race.

  2. It will be interesting to see what timeslot HTGAWM will get due to downton, revenge, winners and losers?, the blacklist, and my kitchen rules running overtime

  3. I agree poor quality shows except SBS and some ABC.

Also agree that TV show promos should not air in Nov for a Feb start date! I think 6 weeks is still excessive!!

  4. Agreed, way too early with the MKR ads – around December would be more appropriate. Plenty of US content available, channels have not decided to bring them forward.

  5. Already sick of promos for MKR! I’m still finding plenty to watch or record – too bad many good shows are on after 10.30pm. ABC and SBS still have some good docos too.

  6. 7 and 9 have told viewers its summer by scheduling nothing but rubbish and not fast tracking anything worthwhile. Maybe one day there consistent poor treatment of viewers will come back to bite them. 7 looks silly showing regular previews months ahead of How to get away with murder when its already airing in the USA. These networks think their viewers are stupid.
