2014 Ratings: Seven wins Total People, Nine scores demos.

Ratings: Seven won its 8th year in a row, but Nine has closed the gap, and some good news for TEN.

boxer2Seven has won the annual ratings race for the eighth successive year.

Seven won the battle in Total People and weeks won.

Nine has again won the advertiser-friendly demos 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54, for the third year in a row. This year it has again closed the gap with Seven in Total People.

Unlike 2013, TEN has finished in front of the ABC in network share and increased its share by more than any other network.

ABC’s primary channel still pipped TEN’s in Total People.

The AFL Grand Final was the biggest audience of the year in the 5 city results (although with Metro + Regional NRL Grand Final takes the lead).

SEVEN

Seven’s Director of Programming, Angus Ross, said: “Seven is all about consistency and trust. With the right mix of Australian-made programming, live sport and the best of international programming, Seven is number one for the eighth year in a row. You can’t get much more consistent than that. We also continue to acknowledge the leadership of Sunrise and The Morning Show across breakfast and morning television.”

Director of Production, Brad Lyons, said “We’ve made more local shows this year than ever before and the audiences have demonstrated they love it. My Kitchen Rules is the number one programme of the year and House Rules continues to build as the biggest new franchise. Our success with INXS and The Killing Field, the continuing delivery of Better Homes and Gardens and the massive inroads we have delivered at 5.30pm with Million Dollar Minute coupled with Home and Away’s extraordinary performance at 7:00pm underline our 2014. We’re looking forward to 2015.”

NINE

Michael Healy, Director of Television with the Nine Network said: “All of us at the Nine Network are pleased to claim the number one mantle with all key demographics for the third year running in 2014. The result means we are the most watched network with everyone under 65. It is proof our programming resonates with our target audience and that’s what we all work so hard to achieve. It is, of course, a team effort and I must thank and congratulate our whole Nine family – on air talent, our management team and all staff on achieving this common goal. We also acknowledge and thank our incredibly loyal viewers who tune in night after night, making us part of their lives. We will certainly not be taking our foot off the accelerator – 2015 will be a massive year for Nine.”

TEN

Network Ten Chief Programming Officer, Beverley McGarvey, said: “MasterChef Australia was a standout performer for TEN this year, lifting its audience 31%, which was a remarkable achievement for a reality series in its sixth season.

“We also saw strong growth from Offspring, The Living Room, the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, The Bachelor Australia and other series, and the successful launch of new series such as Family Feud – which is now the most popular game show on Australian television – Gold Coast Cops and Territory Cops.

“Our US series performed well this year, including Modern Family, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Law & Order: SVU and The Good Wife. And the three most-watched shows of the new US television season – Madam Secretary, Scorpion and NCIS: New Orleans – all launched successfully on TEN this year.”

Given this was also a year with Commonwealth Games it is tradition to supply data with and without 2 weeks of event programming but this has not been supplied.

  1. Thanks David. I didn’t think it would be fair to Seven and Ten for Nine to have the advantage of adding NRL Grand Final to the network share just because it is on prime time. Surely, that 2million plus ratings would have inflated the network share. Anyway, I suppose that’s how things work in the industry…at least for the time being.

  2. Thanks David. I meant to ask if both NRL and AFL Grand Final ratings counted as their overall ratings at the end of the year. I read somewhere that an afternoon event would be excluded.

    1. Ok… yes the ratings are counted. I think what you are referring to is how they impact network share. The share is factored on 6pm-midnight. so the AFL GF audience did not directly contribute to Seven’s annual share, whereas NRL in primetime did. But the individual results still stack up in annual rankings as published above. Seven would love the AFL GF in evening, but the AFL has not budged.

  3. @Shoudy Chen – I want TEN to get closer to the other 2 networks, as ABC seems to be dwindling year on year. I feel TEN will have an excellent year if only they can get their scheduling right

  4. Correct me if I am wrong but was the NRL Grand Final included in the final ratings but AFL Grand Final was not because it was shown in the afternoon? If that’s the case, would that be fair?

  5. Not a lot to boast about really. Seven and Nine did about the same, but revenues were down as advertising revenue continues to move online.

Ten’s increases partly due to Sochi and the Commonwealth Games on ONE, one offs. Masterchef’s rise was because ratings plummeted in 2013 because they mucked up the show and its promotion and programming trying to go head to head with MKR. Getting 450-550k for the top rating US new shows isn’t great.

The BBL will bring in more revenue over Summer this year, and Family Feud attracting younger viewers and feeding them into The Project and evening shows are their big wins.

  6. My how times have changed, The Good Wife has been picking up around 280,000 or so and that is seen as a performing well, though perhaps it’s getting good TEN Play hits and timeshifted results as well (and please don’t get me wrong, I love the show).

  7. @MJL & David,
I was just reading the same article & the 1st thing that popped into my head was the Herald-Sun stretching the figures whichever way they pleased in order to suit the story.

They also threw the kitchen sink at Daniel Andrews last week & he’s now the new state premier.

  8. This article said 9 won Melbourne heraldsun.com.au/business/nine-the-ratings-winner-in-footy-city/story-fni0dcne-1227140168187?nk=b43bad969a0aec147e2c3b42d3fe3a2d

  9. I think nine needs to re strategise. I think go back to half hour news and then 630 for A Current Affair then 7pm for stripped shows like The Block and make it constant. One hour then a sitcom (TBBT etc) at 8 then dramas at 830. Also saturday night needs to be fixed .. School spectacular shows people want to watch quality variety entertainment. Same advice to ten .. Half hour project at 630 then strip biggest loser etc ..then maybe a late night live project to pick up crumbs from no Lateline on abc

  10. Well done to Ten, lets hope they can build on this momentum in 2015.

As for the other two, its impossible to keep track of a non reality show on Seven, and Nine are a one trick pony, not offering much outside of reality tv and Big Bang repeats.
