2014-12-10_2204ABC strays into Schoolies Week next Tuesday night with Inside Schoolies: You Only Live Once, an observational documentary filmed on the Gold Coast in late November and the following week in Bali.

This will be immediately followed on ABC2 by After Schoolies: Live with Tom Tilley, a live forum on the Gold Coast discussing the issues raised.

For some it’s ‘Schoolies’, for others ‘Leavers’, but whatever you call it, saying goodbye to high school with a week-long party is a firmly established Aussie rite of passage.

But is FOMO (fear of missing out) driving the party culture? And will YOLO (you only live once) lead to an unforgettable time for the right or wrong reasons? Have efforts to control this rite of passage led to an increase in totally unsupervised and therefore more risky environments?

From the hotel rooms of the Goldy to the nightclubs of Bali, ABC TV goes behind the bad headlines and inside the heads of young Australians as they experience the fun, anxiety, hope and confusion that has come to define this transition into adulthood.

Narrated by triple j’s Zan Rowe, Inside Schoolies will be filmed in an observational documentary style during Schoolies week (21 – 29 November) on the Gold Coast and the following week in Bali.

  2. With you on that Hoin. While it doesn’t happen often, this sort of thing plays into the hands of those that think it has a bias (I have a few concerns). Surely the ABC thinks enough of it’s audience that it can air a point of view without having to point out the prevailing view afterwards. This was particularly obvious after the show on the climate.

  3. Whenever the ABC has a live discussion program after a doco it usually means they disagree with the content and they want the discussion to “set the record straight”. They did this after the climate skeptic doco, also after the recent radical Islam doco. I hope the fire alarms don’t go off during this one …
