Game of Thrones most pirated show of 2014

For the third year running Game of Thrones tops the piracy list -and breaks a new record.

2014-06-06_1621For the third year running Game of Thrones is the most downloaded TV show of the year.

TorrentFreak reports it topped more than 8 million downloads via BitTorrent, followed by The Walking Dead (4.8m) and The Big Bang Theory (3.9m).

The season finale of Game of Thrones also set a brand new piracy record, with a quarter of a million people sharing a single file at the same time.

Online streaming and downloads for file-hosting services are not included since there are no public sources to draw data from. Total piracy numbers will therefore be significantly higher.

  1. TBBT has always been highly illegally downloaded in the US. It has a lot of younger fans some who think nothing of downloading an ad free copy to watch at their convenience rather than paying for basic cable to get an FTA signal or subscribing to Hulu.

Boardwalk Empire had under 3m regular viewers in the US. It’s something HBO subscribers watched because it was there, not something that young people would go to great lengths to seek out. The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones are much more popular and talked about, and watched by younger viewers.

  2. I’m surprised Boardwalk Empire’s final season didn’t make the list, however it only had 8 episodes. I can’t understand the popularity of Game of Thrones. I’ve seen some episodes and the show seems to drag on a lot.

  3. I’ve never seen Game of Thrones either ryan. I’ve never watched most of the top rating Auusie TV shows like The Block, Masterchef, My Kitchen Rules, X Factor, Dancing With The Stars, Packed To The Rafters etc etc either

  4. I think people would be downloading Big Bang because it gets mucked about with so much on the Telly. If they just played it in the same time slot on the same day each week, with no sneaky repeats instead of new eps, then people would be a lot more likely to just watch it on TV.

  5. I don’t think anyone would be surprised at GOT being #1. What did surprise me was TBBT. I would have thought being a traditional sitcom which airs on FTA and airing so many repeats (here in Australia anyway) that users wouldn’t feel the need to download it.
