Massive audiences for breakfast TV after siege

Sunrise and Today draw their biggest audiences of the year as viewers awaken to see how the siege ended.

2014-12-17_1513On Tuesday morning, viewers flocked to morning television to see how the siege in Martin Place had ended.

Sunrise, with its location backdrop, was unsurprisingly the preferred choice. Still shut out from their studios home, David Koch and Natalie Barr hosted live on the street. Barr, only learning on air she learned of the death of barrister Katrina Dawson while she was on air.

“I’m just finding out that Katrina Dawson was the sister of a prominent barrister, Sandy Dawson, who has done some work for Channel Seven. Who I know and who I have friends who know. She was a mother of three children,” she said.

Sunrise pulled its biggest audience of the year at a massive 634,000 viewers (it averaged 407,000 before 7am). It turned out to be the show’s 5th highest ratings ever (Beaconsfield rescue is #1).

Today also attracted their best audiences of the year at massive 502,000 viewers (385,000 before 7am).

ABC News Breakfast was also huge at 172,000  / 78,000 (135,000 / 60,000 before 7am).

Studio 10, which had put in a massive day-long broadcast on Monday, also aired from 6am but without the benefit of audience awareness was crushed by the competition. Its best figure was 44,000 from 8:30 – 9:30am with 36,000 prior to 7am.

  1. I think part of the problem for Studio 10 is the audience it is chasing; intellectuals.
A: Most of them are working during that time of day
B: They won’t put up with infomercials.
Its a great show I would watch it more often if I was home that time of day.

  2. I won’t watch Studio 10 after the way they dumped The Circle and left that Breakfast Show on air. Viewers are not a tap, they cannot switch us on and off.

  3. Let’s face it. Why would anybody even consider ten when it comes to news coverage and their lack of investment in it. One news program once a day is not good enough. Especially given the older demographic they are now chasing.

  4. Kinda wonder how long studio 10 will continue as it’s ratings have not lifted. It is the best of the morning offerings but has not penitrated. And I don’t think it was listed in tens 2015 up fronts. Maybe the advertorials save it from the axe.

  5. It’s unfortunate more people didn’t flick over to Studio10. It’s coverage of the tragedy was excellent. It’s a great little show that I hope Ten stick with.

  6. I feel sorry for Studio 10, Network Ten need to pump some money into this show through advertising, take it around the country to each City so each state gets to know the hosts and the show because it’s a dam good one.

  7. Its certaintly the first thing I did when I woke up… Not the outcome I was looking for though.

David any idea what they numbers were like when it unfolded live?

  8. Studio 10 was always going to lag behind the competitions. The only ones who would’ve known they were on air were those who check the shows Facebook and Twitter accounts. Plus, in major breaking news people are going to go to the shows they trust with major breaking news, obviously Sunrise and Today.

  9. Any national figures David for Today, Sunrise, News Breakfast or Studio 10?

Not surprising for Studio 10. You can’t blame the show itself – but Ten has basically told Australians over the last 5 years “tune into Ten in the AM and expect to see either cartoons, ET, Judge Judy, Bold & The Beautiful, Breakfast, Wake Up or….something else”

    Consistancy Ten, consistency.
