Summer of Tennis: guide

2014-12-29_2107Seven’s tennis grand slam gets underway from Sunday with back to back events the Hopman Cup, Brisbane International, APIA International, Kooyong Classic and the Australian Open.

Events will be broadcast on Seven, 7TWO and 7mate at various times and for the first time fans will include live streaming on mobile, tablet and desktop, allowing fans to watch the match of their choice from any ‘television court.’

Also for the first time coverage will be available through the PLUS7 service on Hybrid (HBB) TV, choosing from up to seven broadcast courts at the Australian Open plus match highlights, players on social media, live scores and interacting with other fans. It marks the most access Seven has ever provided.

The only thing missing is more High Definition coverage of premium events, such as Australian Open finals.

Bruce McAvaney will be in the commentary chair throughout the Australian Open, with feature commentators including Jim Courier and, when his playing commitments allow, Lleyton Hewitt. Also commentating are Todd Woodbridge, John Newcombe, John Fitzgerald, Roger Rasheed, Sam Smith, Rennae Stubbs, Alicia Molik, Nicole Bradtke and Henri Leconte.

  1. I really really wish 7 would keep to timetable. I changed over at 9pm last night hoping to catch the last 30 minutes of escape to hte country on 72, and then the renovation history show (which they have been promoting heavily). The tennis was on. So I gave up and finished watching Emma instead. when I flipped back the tennis had finished, but I had not idea how long ago, or if I would of managed to watch my show anyway…. its frustrating.

  2. Wouldn’t it be best if the Australian Open up until the quarter finals where shown simultaneously shown on 7, 7Two and 7mate. So that you can choose the court, angle, commentary box and player (similar to a red button).

Can’t wait. I’m hoping there won’t be 40 degree celcius days again. Want to watch the tennis live at Melbourne Park to avoid seven’s usual awful telecast.

Every year we get about 5 minutes of live tennis and 55 minutes of promos, ads, promos, ads, promos and Bruce McAvaney never shutting up.

And I know the other commercial networks are just as bad with the cricket, footy or whatever sport they telecast.

Wish there was some way to watch the tennis on tv and skip all the bloody ads and promos – but they now screen the promos while the tennis is on.

All I know is that every year I make a note not to watch any show that has been advertised during the tennis…no matter how good it might be.

  4. Can’t wait, really love the tennis. Good to see that Seven are using the digital channels as they should be. Also might just have to get a HBBTV or Pvr. It looks interesting.

I can’t wait!! To be honest I don’t really care if it is HD or not at least they are showing it. 2 slams of the year aren’t even on FTA

@scruffy I’d blame 2 seasons of House Rules for that!

  6. Good thing I rarely watch FTA, how unbearable being stuck with nothing but tennis on 3 channels, then over on Nine there is cricket, and even TEN has cricket. My god how boring.

  7. Fancy watching blurry tennis balls flying through the air or trying the see if indeed the ball crossed the white line in glorious SD at 576i !!! grow up Seven

  8. I’m really looking forward to the Australian Open this year. This new HBBTV concept has me intrigued. Can’t wait to see what its all about. Plus the dual channels in the first week at least is great. Wish it happened during the 2nd week too though, especially with the bigger matches.

  9. I think some states will be getting home and away the early years and some won’t because it’s still on in Sydney according to my Foxtel EPG

some states could also be missing out on a very memorable episode

  10. Just like when 7 recently introduced and heavily promoted the a new home and away app, 7 doesn’t that app available or make plus7 available to windows phone users. As a viewer who would take advantage of tennis mobile streaming but isn’t able to because 7 ignore a segment of the market and don’t provide the technology to use a service they provide.

  11. Glad there will be two channels of coverage. Hopefully it means I won’t have to wait until the end of the tornament to see some of the top players at the expense of Aussie matches.
