Former Sounds host Donnie Sutherland is battling the return of throat cancer and has been forced to undergo the removal of his voice box this week.
Sutherland hosted Seven’s music video show Sounds -originally as Sounds Unlimited- from 1975 – 1987. The former 2UW DJ replaced producer Graeme Webb as host in March 1975.
Seen as the only long-running contender to Countdown, Sounds will mark 40 years since its debut next year. It was only the second show in Australia to be broadcast in colour.
Sutherland, who was later awarded an Order of Australia, has been an Australia Day ambassador for the last 15 years.

Darn cancer….just awful for anyone to lose their voice…but more so for someone whose life is using their voice…hang in there Donnie.
I grew up watching “Sounds”.
I love Donnie.
Sending you lots of love.
I hope you’re feeling better soon x
In 1987 I was in a make shift band that jammed with Donnie after a 24 hour telethon telecast in Toowoomba. He sang back up vocals to Gloria. G-L-O-R-I-A!
It was a hoot of a party I’ll never foget!
Good luck Donnie!
Oh I’m really sorry to hear this.
Hope Donny will recover.
Sadly I’m guessing it’s probably smoking related – back in the day Donny was rarely without a fag in his hand.
But being the 70s, it was common practice for both host and guests/band members to all be puffing away during interviews on Saturday morning Sounds and other live music shows.
Best of luck to Donnie – Millions of Aussies grew up watching Sounds on Saturday Mornings. It was part of the weekend ritual. As you would have said “keep on rockin”
I hope he gets through this – a wonderful and passionate music presenter. Get well soon, Donnie.
