Returning: The Block

Nine premieres its new season some two weeks before the start of official ratings.

20140930_TheBlock_LukeEbony_MED_0202The Block: Triple Threat begins later this month with nine teams competing for just four places in a rundown South Yarra apartment building.

Six new teams will battle for three places on The Block, while three returning “All Stars” will compete for just one spot.

Nine premieres the series with an extended episode at 7:30pm Tuesday January 27, some 2 weeks before the start of official ratings.

Joining host Scott Cam are Shelley Craft,  judges Neale Whitaker, Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer, foreman Keith Schleiger and new ‘foreboy,’ former contestant, Dan Reilly.

“We are on Darling Street, South Yarra, in inner city Melbourne. The folks here live in one of the most aspirational parts of the city. This Block is a once in a lifetime opportunity and this new batch of contestants will have to work harder than anyone we have ever seen just to make it through.

“If they are lucky to make it through all that hard work they will have to lift to the next level to produce apartments for auction. I think we have learnt there is no such thing as easy money on The Block. It’s a competition to produce an apartment where you get to keep anything made over reserve and the team who makes the most over reserve pockets the $100,000 grand prize. That’s The Block. It will never be easy.

“Our Triple Threat All Stars have been here before. They know it’s a buyer’s market and what it takes to get to auction day. Our ‘newbies’ will need to go above and beyond to produce apartments that are glamorous, functional, and deliver a little unexpected magic that buyers in South Yarra expect.”

There’s quite a bit of renovation and design experience among our new Blockheads, with one team having a lot of big ideas, but zero experience. The first week of eliminations with the six new teams will show if experience counts.

The six “newbies” will be challenged with producing a bedroom in just 24 hours to survive instant elimination. The remaining five will then have two days to produce a living/dining area before another is eliminated. Then four teams will have three days to produce a bathroom before we are left with the three triumphant teams who will move into The Block.

The three successful new couples will then go head-to-head with three seasoned Blockhead teams chosen from past series. But the heat will be on the All Stars, as only one of their teams will survive the first week.

The Block Glasshouse auctions last year proved once again that The Block is the ultimate reality show. Until the hammer comes down no one knows which way it is going to go. For now the new contestants and returning All Stars will need to take it one room at a time before the big day.

Just off busy Toorak Road in South Yarra, the 1357 sq m apartment block at 27 Darling Street is a solid, unappealing brick box built in the 1970s. Its glory days are definitely behind it and the faded star is in desperate need of a Block facelift. Teams will be set the daunting task of transforming what were once three units into one, huge, luxury, three-storey apartment.

Since it began in 2003, The Block has been a ratings juggernaut. The grand finale of The Block Glasshouse last October was watched by a massive average national audience of 3.632 million and an incredible $8,936,501 in prize money has been won since it began.

  1. I have been a big fan of the Block but seriously lost interest last year and this season is not doing anything to win me back.
I agree with what everyone else is saying. There needs to be a refresh of judges (bring in a much needed real estate expert) and it needs to go back to basics (renovation over over-the-top styling).
Until this happens, I will be tuning into something else more entertaining.

  2. I liked The Block in the first years when they actually focused on renovating and not solely on the decoration aspect. Now with all this bitching and arguing, you can’t watch this scripted crap.

  3. It will end up finishing at 9.17pm followed by Big Bang Theory repeats…

I honestly don’t get the point of eliminations before the Block gets into the main part of the show – it is a turn off.

Much prefer when they get straight into it – with the 4 or 5 couples competing doing so from the start.

What is the point to have some couples on for a week only to be gone? And why does every season have to get more and more convoluted than the one before? Can’t imagine what The Block will be like in a few years time if still around.

  4. Agree with most comments, overkill, overkill, overkill, The Block and The Big Bang Theory are the only programmes to keep channel 9 ratings alive apart from the (far too much) sport they have, really switched off this channel these days, it will be good when people stop watching it maybe then they will get something descent to watch, have not seen many promo’s for their new shows this year but with all the reality shows and repeats they have probably don’t have room for the good shows..

  5. We are so sick to death of the adds for The Block and MKR that we either switch channels or mute whenever they come on.
This stuff is really so yesterday.
Enough of these same old cheap fake-reality time wasters! Just show the room reveals and put the rest of it on Go for pity sake!
Spend the money on some decent local drama and comedy for a change!

  6. Why! they could just rerun the first eps of all of this type of shows like this cause its all the same couples re build a house or apartments argue with each other and there builders and do challenges its the same every season , networks need to make quality shows ,series drama ,comedy not this rubbish.

  7. sssooo over it. CH9 have been inundating us with promos since November 2014 and I for one have lost interest in watching The Block in 2015. Im bored already without having watched an episode.

  8. Phfffft who cares, for us it’s a hopeless programme that usually makes the following show (like Gotham) start late 15 to 30 minutes. The Block mindless swill

  9. urrrgh….might give this season a miss 6 teams to 3, sorry, too many teams and if one (or more of them) that I like get booted before it even starts then its going to be a disappointing, frustrating season, and I don’t like any of the “All Stars” either…they also have a made up position of “foreboy” of an annoying past contestant (do we know if he even has the qualifications to be in a foreman (or “boy”)?).

Finally they have the 3 judges who pretty much screwed over the contestants last season by making them go big fancy luxury in a market and location that didn’t support that lifestyle.

The Block needs to go back to basics, 4 new teams with little renovation knowledge and judges without over inflated “storage” “storage” “storage” egos, they have 3 interior decorates as judges but no real estate expert.

The show has lost its way and I probably won’t watch it…
