TEN apologises for Family Feud cyclist question

"What is something annoying that a cyclist might do?" It's not the answers, it's the question...

2015-01-14_2026TEN has apologised after a question on Family Feud sparked a social media reaction this week.

The question “What is something annoying that a cyclist might do?” drew return fire from angry cyclists.

Australian Cycle Alliance president Edward Hore told Fairfax, “Seriously, the hatred against cyclists has to stop. We are all someone’s mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter.

“We all have family and everyone knows a cyclist.

“We all know that as soon as you bring cyclists into the conversation you’re going to get ratings, which is really sad.”

“Network TEN apologises if the response to a question in Family Feud last night caused any offence,” a TEN spokesperson said. “The results are determined by a survey of 100 Australians and we understand they are not necessarily reflective of all Australians.”

TEN’s game show has previously drawn reactions for a question that delivered suggested a typical woman’s job included dishwashing and cleaning.

  1. boy_wonder: The question was to name “something annoying that a cyclist might do”. The response was “everything” as in “Everything they do is annoying”. Noone is blaming cyclists for world famine, or introducing apartheid to South Africa.

    Qubec: Its the uncomfortable seats.

Shoudy Chen: I’m pretty sure Grant doesn’t write the questions.

Beckala: The only reason it was in the media was because of complaints from cyclists. I mean I’m sure the pensioners that watch Family Fued while sipping warm tea are hardly going to get out on the road and harass cyclists.

gregaus: Yes. They did it for the publicity. They also included “Ham” as the top answer for sandwich fillings in the hope it would incite a vegan riot, or better yet invoke the wrath of Jewish immigrants.

HardcorePrawn: Would i get home if the cyclist travelling at 15kph on a single lane road and holding…

  2. As a regular cyclist – one who obeys the road rules, and pays rego on a car, but chooses to leave it at home most days – it’s rather disturbing to read these comments here.

I trust that all of you that have posted here remember that, as stated in the article “We are all someone’s mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter” when you next encounter a cyclist.
We’re incredibly vulnerable on the road, and while there are idiots out there on bikes (just as there are in cars, trucks, motorbikes, and even walking on pavements) most of us just want to get to our destination in one piece and get a bit of exercise or save on fuel while we do.
We’re not riding a bike to annoy you, and we’re actually doing you a favour. Do you think you’d get home any quicker if I was sat in front of you in traffic in my car?

  3. “We all know that as soon as you bring cyclists into the conversation you’re going to get ratings, which is really sad.

If I had a drink in my mouth, I’d have spat it out laughing. Reads like some really elaborate satire but he’s actually completely sincere.

  4. Look – from the other side. My husband and brother both cycle to and from work. This means less cars on the road. My husband cycles 23kms, 1km of which is actually on a road. He used to be a professional road cyclist so he knows what he’s doing (had to retire due to a back injury). And let me tell you – the day after another rant is released in the Daily Terror – he will be harassed, he’s been hit, had stuff thrown at him, people brake check – literally, the day after another ranting editorial, it’ll happen! . So I can see both sides – I hate stuff like that being seen as “ok” in the media because it encourages people to behave negatively – gives them a reason to think that their (usually illegal and harassing) behaviour is justified.

But I also agree that the demand for an apology was probably over the top. Frankly – I have more issues with ridiculous drivers in 4WD who have…

  5. As a cyclist who rides for transport only i have no problem with this question and i agree cyclists should have to pay rego they use the road like motorists do so they should have to pay as well

  6. I was driving today and while I was approaching a green pedestrian traffic light and a cyclist were still crossing the street. I had to beep at them so they would stop for me.

  7. There may be a lot of critism from cyclists regarding this question but just think of the huge amount of praise and approval coming from drivers. That latter overwhelms the cyclists in this case. Ten shouldn’t be apologising for anything. The majority of road users are thanking them for bringing up this question.

  8. Another pointless apology by TEN. It’s a fun family show and indeed these are some of the things cyclists do. Of course, it’s not reflective of all cyclists and neither are the answers for any of the questions.

  9. Can’t see how asking a question about cycling is “hatred” or a ratings grab. They could just as easily (and maybe have) asked “What’s an annoying thing other drivers might do?” or “What’s an annoying thing pedestrians might do?” and nobody would complain.

    The truth hurts.

  10. Another stupid question asked from Grant Denyer. I might be thinking that this would be much worse than the Bert’s Family Feud in 2006! A contestant decided that a ‘vibrator’ would be her answer.

  11. Grant: We’ve surveyed 100 Australians and the top answers are on the board. Just how precious are cyclists?
    Contestant: Extremely
Grant: Survey Says….it’s the top answer.

  12. These Lycra clad clowns really do take themselves very seriously. I have 2 more answers:
    1. Over react to game show questions
    2. Ride on the road when there is a purpose built bike path right next to it

  13. Excuse Me Mr. Edward Hore, the hatred against cyclist will stop when either A)you pay the same road rego fees as us drivers. Or B)You stop taking up half of the road.

  14. Yet Hore would be fine the question “What is something annoying a driver might do to a cyclist?”

Hore is just playing to his base and trying to intimate people into silence. Since when has simply finding out what people think been such a problem.

If he wants to actually achieve something he should just point out that a cyclist is legally allowed to take a driving line, or two cyclist can ride in it abreast, on a multi-lane road that is not a motorway where cyclist are prohibited.

  15. Good lord! Cyclists are the most uptight group of people! Must be all that Lycra. Their response to this light hearted question would make it seem like the show offended an ethnic or religious group, not people who ride bikes.

  16. Get a life, people. Just like the ‘mysognonist’ question, this is not offensive whatsoever. I’m sure many cyclists would actually find this humorous. If they had a question ‘What’s something annoying other drivers do?’ I’m sure no one would give a rat’s bum.

  17. Seriously!!! Ten, you have nothing to be sorry about. Why the hell do people and groups these days always feel they have to play the victim. Get the f*** over it. Next question please for the Feud, which group in society gives most people the shits??? Stay tuned…
